POTATO EMBARGO
HOPE FOR RELAXATION.
[PER press association.] WELLINGTON’, April 18. While in Australia, Mr R. B. Tennent, Director of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, looked into the possibility of the Italian embargo on New Zealand potatoes being lifted tor a further period, and he said to-day that, although there was nothing definite to announce yet, he was hopeful of arrangements being made for further supplies from New Zealand being allowed to go into the Commonwealth. The present period expires on Thursday. . Before lie left Sydney, he pointed out that, the main South Island crop would not be ready for digging till May, and it was expected that there would be a very large surplus. The amount available for export, would' be aproximately 2000 or 3000 tons. If the Australian market were made available, every step would be taken to ensure that nothing but the best potatoes entered the Commonwealth.
