RUNANGA NOTES

Lour own correspondent.] Mr. .1. Glynn, who has been an inmate of the Grey Hospital, following a mine accident, has returned home. Mr. and Mrs. R. Morris, Wellington. are visiting Runanga. The monthly meeting of the State School Committee was held lust evening, Mr. R. .1. Armstrong presiding; also present were Messrs. J. McCracken, R. Ewan and .1. Piner (secretary). 'Fhe Headmaster (Mr. .1. A. McLeod) was also present. A circular letter was received from United Dairies, Ltd.. Christchurch, regarding the delays in the return of milk bottle crates to Christchurch.-— 'Mie chairman said that there was no delay at the school, and the trouble must be between the school and Christchurch. The West Coast School Committee’s Association wrote, asking the Committee to join the Association, and offering to send two representatives to the next meeting to discuss the matter. —Decided that the two representatives be invited to attend next meeting.

The Headmaster reported as follows: The present roll number is 126 boys and 128 girls, a total of 254, and the average attendance is 117.1 boys and 120.3 girls, a total of 237.5. Miss D. J. Homer had been appointed to the staff as probationer}- assistant, and commenced duties on February 1. From February 7 to February 21, Miss Homer was ordered to report for duty at the Christchurch Training College, and returned to Runanga on February 24. Miss H. A. Thomson has been appointed as an extra assistant. The school was visited by the nurse, on February 16. and some children were examined and parents interviewed. On Wednesday. February 22, pupils of standards 3 and 6 were taken to Greymouth Baths to receive instruction in.swimming by the instructors appointed during the “Learn to Swim Week.” One hundred and ninety-five pupils competed in the Westland Primary Schools sports held at Greymouth on Friday, March 3. Forty books for the Library have been received ' from the Seddon Memorial Library. The following materials are required for the gardens and lawns: 141bs superphosphate. 141bs blood and bone dust. If rocks can be procured it is proposed to construct a rock garden in the corner behind the baths. The report was approved, and it was decided to procure the materials requested.
