TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping meetings to come. March I.l—Taranaki. March 10, 11—Cromwell. March 11—Carterton. March 17, 18— Wellington. March 17, 18—Ohineinuri. March 18—Waimate. March 23, 25 —Oamaru. March 24, 25— Manawatu. March 25—Birchwood Hunt. March 25, 27—Bay of Plenty. March 30, April I—Hawke’s Bay. Reminder: . Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held on April 1 and 3, will close on Tuesday next at 9 p.m. The club will pay £- towards the travelling expenses of each horse. Gibbs’ Transport will take horses from Inangahqa Junction.

Great Memory: The Magnus-Retrospect mare, Great Memory has been sent to Riccarton to F. A. Roberts’ stable, which in the absence of Roberts in Australia with Defaulter, is in charge of G. Ridgway.

Clessamor Sold: Clessamor has been purchased by Mr. A. Lile. of New Plymouth, and he will probably be put to jumping. Mr. Lile formerly owned Omeo, Illuminate. Tigerisni. and Royal Bengal, and made two visits to Riccarton with Omeo. Clessamor is a six-year-old gelding by Lackham from Cleasanta.

Beaulivre: Beaulivre has not raced since the Wellington Cup meeting, where he won a double, and his next start will be in the North Island Challenge Stakes on the second day of the approaching Autumn meeting. That he is a fit colt he proved at Trentham on Tuesday, when he was always clear of Globe Trotter in a five furlongs gallop, covering the last half-mile in 48 sec. Riders at Carterton: The following riding engagements have been made for the Carterton meeting to-morrow: —G. R. Tattersail, Siegmund, Yours Truly, Dissipation, Phil; R. L. Hitchen, Good Sun; F. N. Power, Mister Quex, Ugly Duckling; W. Doyle, Titter, Drachma, Trebor; J. Forsyth, Liane; J. McCauley, Bisect, Mother-in-Law; P. Burgess, Lustral; A. Jenkins, Barabbas; R. A. Hawkings, White Lady.

Leading Riders: By riding three winners at the Rangitikei Racing Club’s meeting last Saturday, W. Broughton further increased his lead in the jockey’s premiership, and his record is now 44 wins. With 39 wins, H. Wiggins still holds second place, and is closely followed by B. H. Morris and G. R. Tattersall, who both had successes at New Plymouth yesterday. The first, two South Island horsemen on the list are G. Humphries 23 (now retired), and C. T. Wilson 22.

Wynardo: The inclusion of Wynardo in the Waitara Hurdles at New Plymouth yesterday was interesting, as this colt is only a three-year-old, and horses of the age may not start over fences till February 1. Last season. Wild Irishman took on hurdling as three-year-old in May and quickly showed promise at the game, but he unfortunately broke a leg at Riccarton last August and was lost to the Turf. Wynardo, who is trained by H. Gray, is a bay son of The Ace and the Glen Albyn mare, Wynette, who does not appear to have raced. His only success up to date was in one of the Avondale two-year-old races last season. Russian Ballet: The Nightmarch filly, Russian Pallet, scored a comfortable win in the Flying Handicap at the Taranaki meeting yesterday. She ran round the two leaders, Life Guard and Oratory, when they lined up for home, and completely outstayed her opponents, winning by two lengths from the veteran Taitoru, who finished on too well for Rollicker and Race Call. Race Call, the favourite, was well placed at the home turn, but put no dash into his finishing effort. Rollicker cut out in the middle stages. He came on again at the end, and failed only by a head for second money. Life Guard and Oratory both faded out in the straight after setting a strong pace to the turn.

Ajax Again: By his success in the King’s Plate at Flemington yesterday, Ajax s winning sequence is 17. and as he looks to have the C. M. Lloyd Stakes, of £lOOO, weight-for-age, one mile, to be run to-morrow, at his mercy, he will be one behind the sequence record of 19 for Australia and New Zealand held jointly by Desert Gold and Gloaming. Desert Gold established it Hearty 20 years ago, and Gloaming equalled it four years later. Phar Lap s best sequence was 14. At the time he was racing, he was so definitely superior to everything, that he looked certain to go on and establish a new record. However, the New Zealander, Waterline, who had a big pull in the weights, sensationally brought about Phar Lap’s defeat in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes at Flemington.

Taranaki Cup: Yesterday’s Taranaki Cup provided a thrilling’ finish between the topweight. Cheval de Volee, and the favourite, Beaupartir, the Auckland Cup winner prevailing by a nose. Cheval de Volee led all the way. He was joined by Namara at the half-mile, and Beaupartir. who had drifted a little in the initial half of the journey, moved up on the outside of this pair as they turned for home. -Cheval de Volee always had a little the better of the dispute with the three-year-old. and worried him out of it at the. finish. Rustem was second to last: until reaching the turn for home, and came on well at the end to fill third berth. Play On. always well placed, was fourth. Peerless was going well behind the leaders running to the home turn, where she received an opening on the rails, but. she was not equal to the task and completely failed to produce her customary finishing run. Namara ■was beaten at the home turn, but struggled on to finish on terms with Peerless, and it was a fair performance for a promoted hack having his first start over a distance.
