TODAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. February 9, IL—Dunedin. February 9, 11.—Egmout. February 9, 11. —Poverty Bay. February 11, 13. —Rotorua. v February 17, 18—Winton. February 17, 18.—Woodville. February 18.—Tolaga Bay. February 18, 20— Waikato. February 23, 25—Wanganui. February 24, 25—Gore. February 25. —Waiapu. February 25, 27. —Westland. February 25, 27. —Te Arolia. Not, an Acceptor: A Press Association telegram stated that Night Dress was not an acceptor for the Dunedin Cup. Globe Trotter:

■lt is doubtful if Globe Trotter was seen at his best when produced for the Middle Park Plate. He has been suffering from a cold, and may still be feeling the effects of the trouble.

Racing- at Wingatni: Settlement. (Night Raid —Receipt) ran a highly creditable third at. Ricca r ton on Saturday, and is expected to win races during the Autumn. He will be racing at. Wingatui on Thursday. False Price:

Ngawiri (Hauwiri —Ngahere), a four-year-old mare, paid a. false price when she won the Railway Handicap, at Matamata. Ngawiri came fast on the outside from the distance, but iwas lucky to hold off Little Rus'e, who finished brilliantly in the last furlong.

Spratt’s Success: A feature of Saturday’s racing at Riccarton was the successful riding of P. Spratt, who rode four winners, Queen of Song, Waka, Top Row, and Teak. Spratt served his apprenticeship with the Invercargill trainer, J. A. Rawlands, but is now a free lance jockey. Raceline:

In his thirteenth start for the season, Ra.celine won the Okoroire Handicap, by a, neck from The Cardinal, at Matamata, on Saturday. The Cardinal is a three-year-old gelding by Night Raid from that fine- mare, Palestrina, the 1921 New Zealand Oaks winner.

Wingatui Course: Good horses carry big weights at' Wingatui well —probably better than on any other course in the Dominion. The long straight run along the back is slightly down hill and appears to counter-balance the rise from the half-mile post to the straight entrance.

Promising Colt: Moorsotis, winner of the Middle Park Plate on Saturday, was bred by his owners, Messrs E. C. McCullough and F. D. Jones, who purchased the dam, Moofibird, from the Stonyhurst Stud. Moorbird is by The Ace from Moorfowl, by Autumnus from Kirriemuir, by Clanranalcf from Madowla, by Trenton from Azalea, by Galliard. Odtaa:

As the result of his good track work at Ellerslie before the last meeting, Odtaa. was solidly supported in both his races, but he did not appearlikely to win either day. This- brother to Scotland has abundance of speed and is a good-looking novice, so it would be unwise to discard him until he has another opportunity to make ■good. British Nation:

British Nation, a four-year-old gelding by British Empire from a Marble Arch mare, who won the Hinuera Handicap, at Matamata, on Saturday, had previously been placed fiv-e times this’ season, and his turn was' due. Kaspian put in an impressive final run on the rails, and was a little unlucky. Star Vaal, the fourth horse, is a likely improver. He is a three-year-old gelding by Vaals from Billikins.

Slow Beginner: Rebellion would win many races, if he were able to find his feet quicker over the early stages of his races. On Saturday, at Riccarton, he had only one horse behind him leaving the barrier, and was -still in a rear position turning for home. He was giving Teak several lengths’ lead at this stage, and then, with a'n electrifying final effort, he was only deprived of first honours by the narrowest of margins. Rebellion is by Robespierre from Muff. Good Looker: “

One of the best looking novices seen out at the recent Auckland meeting, was Bronze Moth, the three-year-old colt by Bronze Eagle from Midget. He’s therefore a half-brother to that good sprinter Puss Moth, and more is sure to be heard of him. In both his races Bronze Moth displayed promising speed, but he ran “green," particulalry on the first day, due to the* fact that lie was making his first appearance with the colours up. When this colt has had more experience he should be capable of upholding the family reputation.

Dunedin Re-handicaps: Re-handicaps for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting’ are: — Warrington Hurdles —Recollection 61b, now 11-0. Berwick Handicap —Teak 61b, now 8-2. Publicans’ Handicap—Top Row 51b. now 8-10. Dunedin Cup —Queen of Song 61b, now 8-6. President’s Handicap —Spartan 21b now 7-9,

Impressive Win: Ln winning the open sprint at. Matainaia, the Waharoa Handicap. Tooley Street, did very well, for lie was last half-way through the race and standing' up the leaders several lengths. They were Maori Song, Royal Dance, and Galilee, and they raced in close company, clear of (Tosh. Half-way up the running, Maori Song appeared to have the race in hand, but Tooley Street came on the outer to win by a neck, with Galilee a neck behind Maori Song. Tosh. Gappy, and General Ruse finished as named. Donadea: The six-year-old Valkyrian gelding, Donadea, who appears among the nominations for the Westland meeting. this month, iwill carry the colours of Mr. D. A. Withers, of Greymouth. owner of The Sandwichman, who ran second to the champion. Defaulter. in the Wellington Cup. Dona-

dea has done well since he has been on the Coast, though a bruised foot gave him a set-back for a time. He has won races in I lie south, and is expected to race prominently here. Culverden. who has been spelling at R’akaia, is now being hacked about, and Withers will shortly put him into serious work again. Culverden showed promise in his few essays over the battens last year, and the half-brother to Hounslow is expected to develop well in this branch of the game.

Gay Rose’s Success: Following up her good second In the Ralph Handicap, at Ellerslie, on the previous Monday, Gay Rose won her first, race, this season, and her first since last April, when she annexea the Matamata Cup, on Saturday. Black Musk, the place favourite, was the pacemaker, but Forest Acre, who ran up on the outside, gained the lead at. the distance. To that challenge Gay Rose responded effectively, and she beat Forest Acre by nearly ■■ length, with Black Musk a length away, third. To Hai just beat the win favourite, De Friend, for fourth, then came Kena, Miss Appellant and Day Wind. De Friend was disappointed "when essaying a. run on the fence in the straight, and he ran well.

Prudent Prince: Prudent Prince, winner of the Lyttelton Plate, at Riccarton, on Saturday, was purchased by Messrs Barlow, of Christchurch, at the 1938 Trenthahn -sales for 450 guineas. The dam, Squeeze, is a sister to Cu,dd!e, and half-sister to Padishah, all being from the Martian mare Caress. Prudent Prince has not been overdone with racing and, bred as he is, there is every reason to expect him to develop into a high-class performer.

Scold, runner-up to President Prince in the Lyttelton Plate, was purchased in the Spring from her breeder, Mr G. M. Aynsley, by Mr G. R. Macdonald at al good figure, and her attractive effort on Saturday indicated that ishe will soon repay her outlay. She is by Myosotis from Berate, by Silverado from Reproachful, dam of Chide and Chidden.

Auckland Hurdlers: I Among the hurdlers seen out at. the recent Auckland meeting two that impressed were Baldric and Pyrenees. In winning the Orewa Hurdles on the first day, Baldric put up an encouraging performance, for he is a comparative : noyice as far as jumping is concerned. He was also going well in a winning .position when he came to grief on the second day. Further experience is likely to do a lot for Baldric and he appeals as a useful prospect. for next jumping season. In his cnly start at the meeting, Pyrenees gained a lot of friends by his clear-cut win in the Waiwera Hurdles on the second day. He was ridden a patient race by R. E. Thompson, and -when asked to overtake the leaders half a mile from home he did so in a stylish manner. Pyrenees is a proficient jumper, which is not suprising, as he conies from the same family on the maternal side as Brushwood Boy, one-time good hurdler, also Eerie, winner of numerous steeplechase events some years ago. Having had some experience over the big fences, Pyrenees promises to be a decided acquisition to the jumping'brigade next winter.

Auckland Youngsters: Among the two-year-olds who raced on both days at the Ellerslie midsummer meeting were some who disclosed ability to gallop equally as well in the good going of the first day as in the soft going of the second day. Others again seemed to disclose preferences that the circumstances could hardly be described as reversals of form.

La Vie, winner of the Calliope Handicap, is one of the most improved fillies in the province. She was well forward for September racing at Avondale, where she raced prominently in the Stakes and Nursery Handicaps, but she did not make much progress during the spring and summer until she won at long odds on the third day of the Christmas-New Year meeting. That was good form although those opposed to her were for the most part green, and she won only by a. short head, which again was her margin when she won the Calliope Handicap on January 28. Supported to about the same relative extent on the second day, she began as well as usual but finished nowhere. She will not go out of fashion.

Clasic, who was placed on both days, is a good type of colt by Surveyor and in seven starts he has been out of the money only once , winning the Hopeful Stakes at Avondale in Novembei- and gaining five minor places so far. Such consistency connotes a reliable three-year-old career among the handicappers. When the Takanini track speedster, Our Jean, made her bow in the Calliope Handicap, she was accorded some speculative support and she fininshed well enough in fifth place to warrant a follow-up. She should be greatly improved by the experience.

Esquire, a well-turned colt by Foxbridge from Golden Wedding, an Aus-tralian-bred mare by the French sire, Kenilworth, has not been hurried but he was responsible for two promising efforts, showing advancement on the second day, in spite of the conditions. He is owned by the. Movie magnate, Mr. M. J. Moodabe and is expected to de him good service. Easter-time should see Esquire attuned. Fils de Vaals, winner of the Chelsea, staged a brilliant follow-up to his ‘•table-mate, Cheval de Volee. Fils de Vaals and the second foal of Nassau Lady, by Nassau from Principal Lady, by Benzonian and was bred by his owner-trainer, A. Rowan. This is the successful Juliet family.

Wapaugh, who had run second in his first start at To Rapa in December. was rather a suprising favourite for the Christmas Handicap. He was prominent for half the journey and ono of the last home. He is brother to Wagner and Classical and should he a useful three-year-old.

Gladynev was noised abroad as a likely prospect, for the Chelsea Handicap, and he came in for good support, but the undoubted track ability of this Musketoon colt was not revealed under the conditions, and there was no particular merit in his, sixth placing. However, he has had only four races, and was backward when first seen. There may be champagne as well as “Caviare” in the composition of this brother to Rona Bey (Muske-toon-Caviare).

As already announced, Anopheles will not appear again this season. She has had four starts for two wins, a third and a. fourth. Next season, she will be viewed as a likely winner of a. good sprint race.

Trotting MEETINGS”TO COME February 11, 15—Auckland. F’ebruaryll—Otaki. February 11—Canterbury Park. February 18—New Brighton. February 25 —Kaikoura. February 25 —Wairarapa. Change of Stables: B. .1. Mackie has disposed of Worthy Merit to a Marlborough sportsman. Blair Athol: Blair, Athol’s stake winnings total £3260 for 10 wins, 11 seconds, and 8 thirds. He is a half-brother to Silver de Oro, and is destined to win. other races this season.

By Wrack: Talak, a winner at Hutt Park on Saturday, is a three-year-old filly by Wrack from Disappearance, and is one of W. J. Doyle’s team. She gives every promise of developing into a good winner.

A Solid Trotter: Gerfalcon has developed into a. solid I rot ter, and while ho has yet to succeed at two miles, he is staying on much better than formerly. He has a. rare turn of speed and is real class al a middle distance.

D. A. Withers: Big Nelson, Rewai, Irish Peach and Prince Travis, recently raced by D. A. Withers, of Greymouth, will be sold at Christchurch on Saturday next. Mr. Withers has decided to concentrate on his gallopers, and to leave the trotting game alone, at least, for a time.

Anna’s Voyage: The latest addition to V. Alborns team is the trotter Anna’s Voyage, who was taken over by this trainer after the recent Forbury Park meeting. An aged mare by Happy Voyage from Anna, she has some fair performances to her credit. Nomenclature: Mr. W. T. Lowe has selected the name Torere for. a two-year-old gelding by David McElwyn from Tairane, the dam of Lucky Jack. Credence is the name bestowed on another juvenile by David McElwyn—Trusty Child.

Spent Light: Harold Logan was started twice at the Wellington meeting, but while he raced as honestly as ever he found the younger horses all too good for him, and it seems a pity that he should have been raced again after promised retirement from the race track.

Should Improve: Lady Nessa, a young mare by Jack Potts —Nessie, attracted attention by her third to Poker Face and Joan Grattan at Hutt Park, and although she did not measure to their standard, she will improve sufficiently to have early prospects. She is nominated for the Westland meeting.

Useful Pair: Poker Face and Kilrea, are fullblooded relatives, being by Jack Potts from Colene Pointer, a fine mare by Logan Pointer —Queen Cole. To Quincey she left Kingcraft and to Guy Parrish produced Village Guy. Poker Face is a year younger than Kilrea, and they are capable of doing good service to their owner-trainer, Mr. B. Grice.

Acuity: Acuity, who won two races at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting and established a mile and a-half record for the track, is only five years old, and having done little racing she may be expected to improve further. She is by Rey de Oro from Eileen Dillon by Harold Dillon— Brighton Girl by Young Wildwood from a Ha Ha Mare. Eileen Dillon left other winners in Arklow, Realeen, and Agility.
