DEATH IN HOSPITAL Injuries received by Benjamin Walkin, 58, married, storekeeper, of Bright Street, Cobden, in an accident at I lie north end of the Cobden bridge, about two o’clock yesterday afternoon, proved fatal at 3.50 o'clock Hi is morning.

Deceased was cycling from Cobden to Greymoulh when lhe accident oc- . curred, ami it is believed that a strong south-westerly wind was a factor in causing him to collide with a motor van driven by Mr. A. Farquhar, of Runanga. Deceased was about, to cross the bridge as the van was coming off the north end and attempts by both parties to avoid the accident, were unavailing, due partly to the lack of splay at the end of lhe bridge leaving little room for manoeuvring. The impact was severe and deceased received head and internal injuries. lie was picked up in an unconscious condition and conveyed to the. Hospital by Mr. F. W. Baillie. There was little change in his condition during the night and death ensued shortly before four o’clock this morning. The late Mr. W'atkin was a native of Lancashire, aged 58 years. He came to New Zealand 30 years ago, and resided for some years at Christchurch. For 12 years he was store manager for the Canterbury Farmers' Company at Waimate and five years ago took over the Universal Store at Cobden, which lie had conducted until the time of his death. He was a Past. Master of the St. Augustine (Masonic Lodge) and a member of the Royal Arch Chapter (Waimate). He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter, all of Cobden; a brother. Jack (Wellington), and two brothers and three sisters in England. The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon, leaving the residence, Bright Street, Cobden, at. 2 o’clock, for (he Karoro Cemetery.

FARMER KILLED CHRISTCHURCH, February 6. Fatal injuries were suffered by Walter Wright, aged sixty-seven, farmer, of Springston, when he was opening lhe door of the granary on his farm. Wright, was standing on an elevated platform on the building, and he had partly opened a sliding door, which became unfastened from its rollers. Tie was thrown to the ground by the weight, of the door, and a bolt projecting from it entered his head. He was found by his son a few minutes afterwards. He was taken to the hospital. where, he died this evening.

CROSSING COLLISION CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 6. A small sedan motor-car, driven by Miss Doris Adams, of Greendale, assistant. mistress at the Kirwee School, was struck by the 8.45 a.m. SpringfieldChristchurch train, at the crossing at Kirwee to-day. The driver received a slight cut on the head and suffered shock. Miss Adams, who was driving to school from Greendale, had driven her car on to the crossing before she noticed the train approaching.
