INTOXICATED DRIVERS

Found! by the police in a three-sealer ear at Petono last evening, and afterwards certified as unfit, to drive a car, Jeremiah Dwyer, aged 26. and Donald Webb, aged 21, both "I Wellington, wore, foujid guilty by Mr A. M. Gouiding, S.M., to-day, of beingintoxicated while in charge ot. a, car. According to the police, Hie car was an old model, and was started by means of a self-starter and ignition switch, not a key. Neither ot the accused had a license, and both stated that they had no knowledge of driving

a car. The Magistrate remarked that the men were near the controls of a car operated by the ignition .switch only. In such a ease it was impossible to distinguish between the two men, and both must be held equally liable, in spite of the fact that the owner of the car had explained that he left the men in the car while paying a. visit. Each man was convicted and fined £2, and ordered to pay expenses, 27/6. A sentence of 14 days’ imprisonment with hard labour was imposed on Frederick Henley-King, aged 32. employed as a batman at. Fort Dorset, who was charged with, intoxication while in charge of a car at Petoue last evening. He was found by a. traffic inspector slumped over the wheel of a parked car.

In. the Police Court, before Mr Morling, S.M., Hew George Rodney Goldinghara, 34, salesman, was sentenced to one month for being intoxicated while in charge of a. car at 11 p.m. yesterday. His license was cancelled for two years. The police stated that accused was travelling at a fast speed, without lights, and a constable who attempted to stop him had to jump out of the way, to avoid being knocked down. Accused had three similar previous convictions.

Robert Thompson, 35, teamster, was sentenced to a fortnight’s gaol, and his license was cancelled tor two years, for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-cycle, on Saturday night.
