WELLINGTON WINS FIRST RACE.

INVERCARGILL, January 20.

The first Sanders Cup race was sailed on Bluff Harbour this afternoon, in squally weather, with a strong westerly blowing. The race was won by the Wellington boat. The times for the race were: — Vangard, lhr 27min 27sec .. . . 1 Vorena, lhr 29min 49sec .. -. 2 Huia, lhr 30min 12sec .. .. 3 Marjorie, lhr 33min Ssec . . • • 4 Lavina, lhr' 33min 16sec .. .. 5 The Otago boat capsized after the first turn to windward. The leeward course was only live and a-half miles because of a strong ebb tide.

WELLINGTON, January 20

Heavy weather again prevented a Cornwell Cup race being held this morning. Two races a day should have been held, but, though almost a week has gone, only three races have been possible. An attempt may be made to race daily in the early morning and in the evening until the contest is decided'. One crew has to win three races. WIN FOR AUCKLAND. WELLINGTON, January 21. The fourth Cornwell Cup race at Plinimerton, sailed this morning, was won by Auckland, after leading from the start. The race was sailed in the most, favourable weather of the contest. so far, with a. light southwesterly wind. The course was triangular. The start was at 8.16 a.m., and the finishing times were: Auckland Shr 49min, 32sec. Tauranga. 8/51/32. Paremata 8/51/45, Manukau 8/53/15, Wellington 8/53/18, Otago 8/54/9, Wanganui 8/54/24, Plinimerton 8/54/30. It is the first race of the contest in which there were no capsizes. The fifth race starts at 11 o’clock. Principal interest was provided' in the fight between Tauranga. and Paremata for second place, and near the end between Mauukau and Wellington for fourth. Auckland sailed a fine race and were not challenged. Auckland now have two wins and Wellington two wins. The first crew to win three races wins the contest.
