Defaulter's Record: Defaulter has now had 21 starts for 16 wins and' two minor placings for a total of £7,315 in stakes, of which £4,805 has been won this year, lie must bo regarded as the sale ring bargain of recent years, for he cost only ITOgns, as a yearling.

Hawke’s Bay Winner: Dainty Dell, a winner in Hawke’s Bay during the holidays, has possibilities in her pedigree. She is by Defoe from Bonnie Vale (Lackham — Dale Ogden). Dale Ogden is by Kilbroney from Ukraine (dam of Sasanof), a. sister to All Red and Munfeet.

Telegraph Handicap Records; Blazer, who won in 1902 with 10.4 claims the distinction of being the most highly-weighted winner of the Wellington Telegraph Handicap. The Dunedin sprinter had been successful in the two previous years with 9.12 and 9.8. The time record' for the race (and for Trentham) - is held by Silver Ring at 1.9.?. Metal Bird Leased:

Mr. J. J. Anisy has leased Metal Bird from Mr. C. L. Kettle, and will continue to race him over the hurdles. Metal Bird showed some promise in this department at the New Zealand Cup meeting in November, but raced unsuccessfully on the flat on the West Coast circuit.

Gilford, owned by Mr. C. L. Kettle, has been transferred to E. Kingan’s stable, and Kingan will leave on .Monday with Gilford and Metal Bird, for Riccarton. Gilford raced on the West Coast circuit from C. J. Walsh’s stable. Entered for Riccarton:

THOROUGHBRED SALES. WELLINGTON, January 20. The national thoroughbred sales were concluded at Trentham to-day, when brood mares, horses in training, untried stock, some two-year-olds, and other stock were offered. The feature of the auction was the dispersal of the Mana stud on account of Mr R. H. W. Holden, Poukawa, Hawke’s Bay, which was headed by the sire Siegfried, who was bought by Mr A. Chisholm, of Otautau, Southland, for 800 guineas. He is the sire of Wotan, winner of the Melbourne Cup. Lilock, the leading brood mare of the stud, with a brown filly by Siegfried and served by Siegfried, brought 700 guineas. Princess Bell, from the same stud, with a bay filly by Siegtried and served by Siegfried, brought 450 guineas, being purchased for Australia by Mr W. J. Smith, of Sydney, who bought several yearlings on Wednesday. He also paid 650 guineas for Blue Maid, with a'bay colt foal by Bulandshar and served by Bulandshar. This mare was sold on account of Mr J. S. McLeod, Hastings. Drachma, Counter Lunch, and Twilight Song were horses in training sold on account of Mr R. 11. W. Holden, Poukawa, Hawke’s Bay.

Lawn Derby: From the Sydney Referee: “The frequent excuses for Lawn Derby—wet track, jumping tan crossings, crowding, etc. —make one think that he is definitely short of those elusive and rare characteristics that make a real champion.
