FOOTBALLERS CAUTIONED

ASTON VILLA INTERNATIONALS

LONDON, December 8

Tavo famous football clubs, Aston Villa and Neivcastle United, have- incurred the displeasure of the Football Association.

It was announced last night, that three Aston Villa players, all internationals, have been cautioned and one of them fined £5, and that Mr. J. Hogan, manager of the- club, has been fined £5 and reprimanded. The players are: R. W. Starling', inside-left. Played for England against Scotland in 1933 and 1937. G. Cummings, left-back. Has been capped seven times for Scotland. A. Massie, right-half. Has played for Scotland 15 times. Starling is the player who, in addition to being cautioned, has been fined £5. The decisions arise out of the First Division match played at Villa Park, Birmingham, on October 22 between Aston Villa and Leicester City. Leicester won by 2-1. Mr. Hogan’s fine and reprimand were officially stated to be “for unwarranted conduct in the referee’s room after the match.’’

Commenting on the decision last night, Mr. Hogan said, “It is most unfair. This is my first offence in football and in my opinion a . caution would have been quite sufficient. 1 formed my opinion of the game and because afterwards I went into- the referee’s room and expressed it this has happened. In my long experience of football, both as a player and in executive positions, there has never been any complaint of anj’ sort against me, anil t was astounded at the- decision of the F.A. As far as Starling is concerned, his, in my opinion, is a very severe punishment. I am still convinced that Starling did not leave the field as alleged, but ran to within a yard or two of the- touchline and changed his ripped shorts." Mr. Hogan formerly played for Fulham, Swindon Town and Bolton Wanderers. He managed Fulham for a short, while a few years ago.

Newcastle United have been ordered to post warning notices to spectators-.. This is the outcome of incidents during the Newcastle v. Bradford match on October 29 when Newcastle won by 1-0. Newcastle are also to print the warning to spectators in the programmes of their next four first team matches.
