Mr and Mrs R. Steel arrived yesterday, from Wanganui.

Mrs. M. E. Jamieson will leave tomorrow, on a visit to Christchurch.

Miss C. Moore will leave to-morrow, for -Wellington.

Mrs. A. M. Jamieson will leave tomorrow, on a visit to Ashburton.

Mrs. S. Harrington, Runanga, who is an. inmate of the Grey Hospital, is making satisfactory progress.

The death took place on Monday night of Mrs. Bessie T. Thompson, of Hokitika. She was the first child to be born, in the township of Kahieri, where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Martin were pioneers, and was. 70 years of age. Her husband, the late Frank Thompson, pre-deceased her 12 years ago. She leaves a family of one daughter, Mrs. J. Cugich (Hokitika), and two sons, Alfred (of the locomotive staff of the Railway Department, Greymouth), and William (Hokitika). She also leaves two sisters,' Mrs. North and Miss P. Martin (both of Hokitika). \

A Press Association message from Gisborne announced the death of Mr. Richard Sherratt, a pioneer settler of the east coast district, and a patron of racing, polo, and hunting. Coming to the Dominion more than 70 years ago, at the age of 16, he took over a property at Tolaga Bay, five years later, and subsequently managed and owned various other properties. At the time of his death, he was patron of the Poverty Bay Hunt Club, and the Poverty Bay Polo Club, and a life member of the Poverty Bay Turf Club. He had a long record in the hunting field/ and only two years ago, at the age of 85 years, he last rode to houndq. His wife predeceased him ten years ago, but. he is survived by five children. A brother (Mr. W. G. Sherratt), and three sisters, are resident in England.

The New Zealand Council of Educational Research has selected Mr. A. E. Campbell a Director, in succession to Doctor C. E. Beeby, recently appointed Assistant Director' of Education. Mr. Campbell is, at present, lecturer in Education, and Director of W.E.A. studies at Victoria University College, and also secretary of the Dominion Council of the W.E.A. He has a brilliant academic record, and has had wide and varied experience in practice of education. At a-meeting of the New Zealand Council of Educational Research, a resolution was passed 6xpressing very high appreciation of ! the excellent work done by Doctor Beeby, its first Director, and stating that while the Council sincerely regrets the loss of Dr. Beeby’s most valuable services,, it was pleased to see him occupying one of the key positions in the educational service, and wishes him a long successful career in the Department of.
