UNITED DEBATING CLUB

“WIND-UP” ■ The annual “wind-up” social of. the United Debating Club was held nt Perotti Hall, the President, Mr S. B. Quintrell presiding over an attendance of about 40 members, including representatives of the St. Columba and Runanga clubs. During the evening the following trophies were presented:—McLean Cup,' to Mr L. B. Galbraith; United Club Cup to. Mr J. Denford; Kent Honours Board, to Mr R. R. Dawber (for the United Club), and the Strong Memorial Board (to the United Club); Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mr S. W. S. Strong, a foundation member of the West Coast Debating League, and a member of the club. The Memorial Board, designed by Mr Dawber,’ was presented to the United Club by Mrs Strong, in memory of her late husband, but the club felt that Mr Strong’s wdrK in forming tUe Debating League was worthy of permanent commemoration, and had handed the Board to the League for inter-club competition. After the loyal toast, the following toasts were honoured: —“Absent Friends” (proposed by Mr T. Sotheran, and responded to by Mr J. North); “McLean Cu,p Winner” (Mr D. C. Milne—Mr L. B. Galbraith); “The Oldest Member Present” (the Chair- ' man—Mr T. Learmont); “United Club Clip Winner” (Mr C. J: -Strbngman— HMr J. Denford); “The Judges” (Mr R. R. Dawber—Messrs Kitchingham, Stewart, Carroll, Paterson, and Bush); “Kindred Clubs” (Mr W. Sheppard—Messrs Clancy (St. Columba) and Cook (Runanga); “Foundation Members” (Mr J. B. Kent—Mr H. Trouland); “Kent Honours Board Team” (Mr W. E. Steer—Mr Dawber) ; “New Members” (Mr R. Mosley) ; “The Wooden Spooners” (Mr G. F. Page); “The Visitors” (Mr C. F. Shapcott Messrs J. B. Kent, A. Fraser, J. Gunn); “The Press” and / “The Artists” (the Chairman—Messrs P. Gecfaes and W. McGillivray). Items were contributed by Messrs J. C. H. McDonald, T. Learmont, J. • Denford, H. Trouland, S. F. Page, J. Sligo, W. 'McGillivray, P. Blanchfield, P. P. Geddes and W. McGillivray.
