The horse looks in good order and should be ready to race at some' of the later Spring meetings. Cillas: The yearling colt by Diatomous from Monanui has had the name Cillas claimed for him. This youngster is stated to be a particularly fine type ahd his' owner, Mr? J; Hoey, "is very hopeful that he will turn out well. Amelita: After being mated with Nigger Minstrel last season Amelita' was kept in training and won three races, and was placed in nine other races. She did not prove to be ip foal, and may be, mated with that sire again. Still Out:

Galleon, who raced well in the early, half ofTast season, is not to be taken in hand again until some time next month? ■ He has always been a difficult horse to keep any condition on, and his trainer intends to give him the benefit of the early Spring grass. Riding Engagements: Among the riding engagements announced for Wanganui are: —W. J. Broughton, Sporting Gift, Gay Son; G. R. Tattersail, Ecstatic, Joviality, Vascones (second day); ‘ J. Chaplin’, Chere Ami, Puroto, Erebus; L. J. Ellis, Quadroon, Old Bill, Florence Mills, Sudan, Barley Almond; J. Forsyth', Merryman; A. E. Lord, Curie. Trainer's License: A trainer’s'license has been recommended to be granted to C. Dawson, who is in charge 'of D. O’Connor’s stable at Riccarton during O’Connor’s absence in Australia. 51 Dawson is at present paying a lot of attention to the grey gelding Pipiwhattroa, who shape’s as if 'he- will make’ a’name for himself as a hurdler. Win Overdue:

Since racing at the Pakuranga. meeting Valmint has not been overtaxed, as-he will not race again until the Avondale 1 meeting. " Although beaten in the Jelicde’Handicap, the chestnut gilding ran a solid race, for the three horses that finished in front of him are proved performers. A win for Valmint is overdue,’'and lie may make a return to the winning list before the : season is much further advanced. Good Hack: A m’oT'e than useful hack when at his best is Omaha, and as he is making fine progress in. his Work he will not lack opportunities in the near future, for‘'there are races : to suit ■'hiin" at Avondale and also at Paeroa a fortnight later. He went off after impressing at Whangarei in the Autumn, and now that he is coming up fr'egh he should soon strike form. ' Valuable Experience: On Several occasions recently Dark Legion has been.'given barrier practice on the two-year-old track at Ellerslie, acquitting himself in satisfactory style each time. Recently in company with another horse, Dark Legion jumped out very smartly for a beginner, and the experience will be an advantage to him when his racing career begins. Although Dark Legion has not been seriously tested, he has shown sufficient speed on the track to indicate that lie will develop into a galloper above the average.

Trip Cancelled: Although, all final arrangements were practically completed at Riccarton yesterday for the despatch of Dictate to . Melbourne by a. cargo steamer leaving Bluff on Friday, the trip was cancelled later in the day, owing to advice being received that the only available accommodation on the steamer was on deck. This did not appeal to the horse’s, owner, Mr. O’Brien, and he then endeavoured to get him on the steamer leaving Wellington for Sydney this week, but again all accommodation was booked, this time by draught horses. The trip, therefore, was cancelled, and Dictate will be able to race at Ashburton next week, and to carry on with New Zealand Spring racing.

Complimentary Tickets: Strong disapproval of the proposal of the New’Zealand Racing Conference to restrict the issue of complimentary tickets by racing clubs Was expressed at the annual meeting of members of the Te Aroha Jockey Club last week. The president, Mr. R. L. Somers, considered the action, of the Racing Conference as nothing short of unwarranted interference with the management of clubs generally. The success of the To Aroha Club was largely due to the use of the complimentary ticket system, and now the club was told that it could invite only 100 people to its meeting.

It was resolved that a strong protest. against the curtailment of complimentary tickets be sent to the Racing Conference.
