SPEEDBOAT STRIKES LOG
PILOT SERIOUSLY INJURED. [BY CABLE—PBESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] DETROIT, September- 5. A new speedboat, named Notre Dame, built at a cost of 75,000 dollars for Herbert Mendelson to defend the Gold Cup\championship, struck a submerged log on the eve of the' race and plunged to the bottom. Clell Perry, the designer and pilot, was injured’and taken to hospital in a serious condition. The other occupant, a mechanic, was uninjured. i Attempts are being made to lift the boat, but it is certain not to race, leaving Italy’s representative, the Count of Monterera, favoured over the other’ six entrants.
