HOCKEY. The West Coast hockey season was opened on Saturday, in showery wea- • ther, but only one match was played, Wesley easily defeating Mawhera, on the Recreation Ground. The St. John’s Harrier Club held their official opening run on Saturday last, from the residence of Mr and Mrs Cliff Deans, Cobden. In ideal conditions a five-mile course was laid by C. Deans and I. Burrell, the trail leading along the foot of the Cobden hills and thence home via Beach Road and Bright Street. The result was: J. Daniel 1, K. Fehsenfeld 2, I. D. McEwin 3. After the run, members were entertained at afternoon tea. Next Saturday’s run will be held from St. John’s Schoolroom. BOXING. GISBORNE, May 2. Displaying his best form to date, George Allen (9.7), Gisborne, scored a creditable win against Ern Jacobs (9.7), the lightweight boxing champion of Hie Dominion, in a contest, on Saturday night. There was little between tlio pair in a good display of boxing, the judges disagreeing on the result, and the verdict in favour of Allen being given by the referee. POLO. SYDNEY, May 1.
