CASES SETTLED. “Nothing facilitates settlement so much as the arrival of the Court,” smilingly remarked the President of the Arbitration Court (Mr. Justice O’Regan) at yesterday’s sitting of the Court at Greymouth, when a settlement was announced in two compensation claims set down for hearing. The members of the Court are Mr. Justice O’Regan (President), Mr. A. L. Monteith (employees’ representative) and Mr. W. Cecil Prime (employers’ representative). When the case of William Oliver (Mr. C. J. O’Regan) v. the Blackball Coal Mines Ltd. (Mr. W. J. Kemp), claim for compensation for alleged injuries arising out of an. accident was called, Mr. O’Regan said that at the present time plaintiff’s injuries were somewhat indefinite,, apd by agreement with Mr. Kemp he would ask foian adjournment until the next sitting of the Court at. Greymouth. The memorandum of adjournment agreed upon was filed. The case was adjourned, as requested. Michael Wafer, bushman. of Runanga. proceeded against the Crown, on a petition of right, seeking compensation for injuries suffered as the result of a fall, while he was engaged on survey- work for the State Milkes Department, on August 19. 1936. Compensation was claimed at the rate of £2 15/4 per week as from December I. 1937. to date, and also further compensation by way of lump sum, in respect to permanent incapacity. Mr. C. J. O’Regan appeared for suppliant and Mr. F. A. Kitchingham for the Crown. Mr. O’Regan announced that settlement had been agreed upon for £147 12/5, with £5 5/- costs, and he asked that judgment for that amount be entered. by consent. Judgment was entered accordingly. William Russell, labourer, of Hitkarere, proceeded against the Crown, on a petition of right, seeking compensation for injuries suffered as a result of his being thrown from a horse whilst crossing Rough River on December 15. 1936, when he was in the employ of the Public Works Department. Suppliant sought (a) weekly payments of £3 6/8 to commence as from the date of the accident (credit being given for any amounts paid to date or such lump sum in lieu thereof as might be just (b) payment of medical expenses. £1 (c) costs of the action, (d) such further or other relief as may be just. Mr. W. Douglas Taylor appeared for suppliant and Mr. F. A. Kitchingham for the Crown. Mr. Taylor announced that a settlement had been arranged, with Mr. kitchingham, and he asked that, judgment be entered for the sum of £350. including costs.

Judgment was entered accordingly. , The Court adjourned until Monday morning.
