TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. April 29, 30—Dannevirke, April 30—Reefton. May 5, 7.—Egmont. May 7. —Amberley. May 7.—Franklin. May 7, 9.—Nelson. May 12,14.—Wanganui. May 14. —Ashburton. May 14. —Southland. May 14, 16. —Marlborough. May 21.— Manawatu. May 21,23. —Waikato. May 19, 21. —South Canterbury. May 28. —Foxton. REEFTON J.C.—FIRST DAY. SILVER RING SUCCEEDS Light rain throughout the afternoon marred the opening of the Reefton Jockey Club’s Autumn meeting yesterday, at the Reefton racecourse, and the attendance was 'only fair. The totalisator figures were down £1,462, the total for the day being £3,119 as against £4,581 when a one-day meeting was held on a Saturday last year. The track was in splendid order early, but became soft as the day progressed, and times were not fast. The meeting was late in starting owing to the late arrival of the Greymouth train, carrying some of the runners, but much of the lost time was made up during the afternoon, and the racing concluded only a little after scheduled time. It was difficult to pick up the horses in the concluding event, from the time they were two furlongs from home until they were well down the straight.

Mungatoon had an easy win in the principal event, the only race in which there were not two dividends. Monipere, who was expected to provide most opposition, did not appear to be at home on the greasy track, and in fact, nearly came down on a corner when the field had gone about half a. mile. Silver Ring made a return to the winning list, when he had no difficulty in heating the moderate field opposing him in the Au Revoir Handicap. The Silverado gelding looked in fine order, and galloped accordingly. He had not won a race since he was successful in the A. J. C. Plate at Randwick, 18 months ago. This season, he has raced unsuccessfully at Hokitika, Motukarara and Trentham. The successful horsemen were: L. J. Ellis, two wins (in six mounts), A. E. Ellis, two wins (in two mounts), G. Watson and A. Messervy. Remaining results, in detail, were:

FIRST HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. 7 furlongs: — 1. THE MASQUERADER, R. E. Adair and J. L. Tomkinson’s br. g„ Limond-Cowl, aged. 9.8 (A. E. Ellis) ‘ 1 2. POTENT, Jas. Johnston’s ch.g. 6 yrs. 9.10 (J. W. Jennings) 2 4. POLISTINA. J. Stewart’s b.m.. 6 yrs. 8.0. (A. Messervy) .. 3 Also started: 5 Contract 8.8 (J. McCauley), 3 Hunting Bag 8.6 (L. J. Ellis). Won by a. head; two lengths. Time: 1.32. A good favourite, The Masquerader, winner of the C.J.C. Great Easter in 1934, won the Highweight Handicap all the way. He was first out from Hunting Bag, Potent, and Polistina. Contract being chopped out. Hunting Bag was done with two furlongs from home, and The Masquerader led into the straight from Potent, with Polistina showing up at the back, and Contract and Hunting Bag well out of it. The Masquerader and Potent had a great tussle up the straight, the former prevailing by a good head, with Polistina tiring in third place two lengths away. Contract was next well back, and Hunting Bag last. Potent went a good race under his big impost. Tote £3971. REEFTON TROT (Harness). 3.3!) class, li miles: — 4. BIG NELSON, D. A. Withers’s blk g„ Nelson Derby-Little Doris aged 60 yds., (owner). .. 1 2. JAMBO, L. Frost’s br. g., 4 yrs. ■ 24 yds. (H. Frost) .. 2 5 LADY ANN, F. G. Lynch’s b.m.', 6 yrs. 36yds. Won by a length; a. length and ahalf. Superb was fourth. Times: 3.31, 3.34 1-5, 3.33 2-5. Tonioro was the early leader and going along the back the last time, he was folio-wed by Jambo, Superb, Parallax, and Lady Ann with Big Nelson putting in some good work on the outside. Jambo was just heading Big Nelson and Tonioro into the straight, with Superb and Lady Ann next. Big Nelson had too much in reserve in the run home, and won nicely by a length from Jambo, with Lady Ann finishingon in third place one and a-half lengths away. Then came Superb, Tonioro, who tired, Parallax and Tarn, Big Nelson has now won in each of his last four starts. Tote £425.

AU REVOIR HANDICAP, 7 furlongs. 1. SILVER RING, A. I-I. Walton’s ch.g., Silverado-Orange Blossom, aged. 10.2 (A. E. Ellis) 1 2. WINDWARD, T. W. Butler’s hr. g., aged. 8.4 car. 7.11 (W. L. Johnston) .. . . . . 2 3. SILVER LARK. B. Winchester’s br.m., aged. 7.5 car. 7.13 (L. J. Ellis) .. .. .. 3 Also started: 4 Metal Bird 8.3, (G. Humphries). 5 Gasmask 7.9 car. 7.6 i'M. Caddy). Won by two lengths: a length. Metal Bird was fourth. Time: 1.31 4-5. Silver Ring recorded his first victory for eighteen months when he romped home in the Au Revoir Handicap. Metal Bird was first out from Windward, Silver Lark, and Gasmask, with Silver Ring last to find his feet. Along the back Metal Bird was still the leader, but, coming across the top Windward headed Metal Bird and Silver Ring commenced a forward move, which carried him into second place just behind Windward as they turned for home, with Metal Bird and Silver Lark on terms and Gasmask beaten. Silver Ring continued his run, and was not extended to win with ease by two lengths from Windward who was a length ahead of Silver Lark. Metal Bird was fourth. Tote £487. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME. April 30. —N.Z. Metropolitan. April 30. —Auckland. May 7. —Oamaru. May 12, 14.—Forbury. May 13. —Marlborough. May 14.—Waikato. May 28.—Canterbury Park. May 28. —Cambridge. June 4, 6, —Wanganui. June 6. 8. —Auckland. U. SCOTT PROTEST. J. R. McKENZIE’S STATEMENT. WELLINGTON, April 28. The following announcement has been made to the Press by Mr J. R. McKenzie, owner of U. Scott: —

“Owing to lhe erratic running of my horse, U. Scott, I feel I owe an explanation to the public who were so unfortunate in backing him in the one and a half miles race on the second day. My sympathies are with them and if 1 were in their place I probably would have felt the same as they did. U. Scott was, left at the barrier at the start of the first day’s race and when he struck his hopples was about 72 yards behind the field, a hopeless position from which to win a race. Yet his driver sent him after the field and he showed a wonderful burst of speed to catch the field, though he was then unable to finish on .in the straight.

“Naturally, the public, after this performance, selected him to win at his second start. Owing, to an injury we were unable to work U. Scott for four months. As he could nor. be given the necessary work in a short time the stallion was very fresh and above himself. “On the. second day, Free Holmes, my driver, tucked U. Scott in behind another horse. U. Scott pulled so hard that it was necessary for Holmes to lie back to hold him, and he had difficulty in keeping him off the sulky in front of him. He took the first opportunity of getting out and letting U. Scott go to the front, but although in front the horse still continued to pull as he could see the field behind: him. The horse hadi partly choked himself through his pulling tactics and although the driver used the whip going up the straight, the horse was unable to respond. “My sympathies are with my driver who had a difficult horse to drive on the day, and I am sure that he did what he considered, would give him the best chance of winning. My trainer and I discussed this horse for an hour after his poor showing, on the second day, and 1 decided that we would run him in a closed; bridle on the next occasion, one reason being so that he would not see the field chasing him. We also suggested to the driver that he should let him run two or three lengths in front of the field so he would not hear the other horses. U. Scott will be driven in the final in a closed bridle the same as Was used when he won the two miles event, I am

of the opinion that now that this horse has had three races* into him, he will probably go a more generous race in the final, and mayi the best horse win.”
