NOTES ON THE RACING. [SPECIAL to “star.”] AUCKLAND. April 27. A track that was cutting out, but drying, proved tricky for speculators on the second day of the Avondale meeting to-day. No favourites returned a dividend, and only one, Valamito, secured a third placing. Racing was chiefly remarkable for the feat of a maiden performer, Superior Guard, who after over two years< of racing, won the Dominion Handicap, and with a 51bs rehandicap, deadheatedi in the next event. Successful Return: All Irish made a. successful return to hurdle racing, after a long absence, in the Hobsonville Hurdles. My Money and High Star made most of the running, and, crossing the top, Kilberis passed High Star, My Money and All Irish being the only two others in the hunt, after Golden Spahi had fallen at the second! to last hurdle. High Star and' All Irish were almost on terms at the final one, but All Irish won easily. Kilberis was a fair followed by My Money, London, who was tailed off to the straignt, and Celtic Lad. Belated Success:

When the Dominion Handicap field of 17 had settled down. Eroadway Bill, British Nation, Sen Acre, General Riske, and Superior Guard were the leaders, but the last-named had assumed charge before the half mile, and, thereafter, the race was a stern chase, Superior Guard 'winning very easily, and at exceptionally good odds considering the class. Hesketoon, who reared repeatedly at the barrier, but got away well, finished strongly to beat Cintrace for second, and then after a two lengths interval, came King Silver, Broadway Bill, British Nation and Bright Idea. A Dead-heat:

Hunting Blood, again a. hot favourite, led out the Waitakere Handicap field from No. 1 position, hut one' 1 more hisl great speed' was' exhausted before the finishing line. Highland Queen was second after a quarter, and next came Asset. Teak, Bronze Wing, Superior Guard, Windcress, and Dragon Moth. The last-named, ran n pon the outside to be second into the straight before Highland Queen, Bronze Wing, and Superior Guard, who was carried out by HuntingBlood. Dragon Moth appeared to have the race in hand, hut Superior Guard came very fast wide out, to divide the honours right on the line. Hutana came from sixth at the straight entrance to be third, two lengths away, and he was followed by Hunting Blood. Highland Queen. Bronze Wing, Windcress and Mai de Mer.

Won Decisively: The three-year-old, Airam, had her first success at ten furlongs, in the Autumn Handicap, and it was a decisive one, against a field of seasoned gallopers. Llangollen, Day Wind, Airam, and Knight of Australia took the field out of the straight the first time, and the first two were attended at the seven furlongs by Tybalt and Prince Rangi, Gay. Rose and Airam, Valamito and Knight of Australia in pairs. Malagigi soon began a run on the outside, from a rear position, and at the home turn, Day Wind, Prince Rang!, Airam, Malagigi, Llangollen and Knight of Australia were the first division. Airam was clear at the distance, and she won handsomely by a neck from Malagigi, with Valamito less than a length further away. Day Wind was fourth, and then came Gay Rose, Jonathan, Enge,

’and Knight of Australia. Paso Robles manifested a cold after his preliminary, and was withdrawn by; permission. First and Last: The bracketed pair. Milanion and Brazilian, finished at opposite ends of the Nursery Handicap field. The* early leaders were Pocket Venus, Noitaro, and Philcourt, the last-named turning for home just ahead of Valimeen, with Eastern Heir handy and Gay Hussar, who was badly left at the start. The last-named, putting in fine work, was, the most serious challenger of Philcourt. at the distance, while Kaspian came into the picture a. few yards further on. Milanion was next to enter calculations, and' he did best of all to beat Philcourt by a long head. Kaspian was a good third, pur--7 sued by Vaalstar, Gay Hussar, Vitement, and Fidelis. Te Takina, the s first day’s winner, was second to last ” and never flattered. 1 Te Monowai’s Success: c Silver Eagle was left, at the start e of the Mt. Roskill Handicap, and Barrister was' also slow to go. When they ,bad settled down Maxown and Alyth were making play from Fleetwind, Aero King, Forest Acre, Ring Shot and Mon Acre. The first six to turn for home were Maxown, Fleetwind, Ring Shot, Prival, Vaalso, and Te 1 Monowai, Barrister being at the' rear. 3 Te Monowai drew away, but had : to 3 answer strong challenges from Vaalso, j I Fleetwind, Barrister on the. rails, j « and Prival before winning by a short ; ' head from Vaalso. Barrister added ■ > another third to his unlucky record, i i and then came Prival, Ring Shot, Pal- • mint. Ivy Willonyx and Forest. Acre. (

Mon Acre finished well back. • Surella Wins Sprint: ; Prince Acre was a strong favourite : in an otherwise even betting race for ; the Mt. Eden Handicap, and he was first away, but finished! eighth. Erndale and Galilee attended 1 him crossing the top, but at the: straight bottom, Tonnerre and Palustrei showed the way for Race Call, Galilee, Prince Acre, Anion, and Surella. The lastnamed drew up to beat Rulette and Tonnerre, who in turn had looked likely from the distance, with heads between them. Palustre was a good fourth, Rerepai fifth and then Tosh and Race Call. The second to seventh favourites. Anion to Tosh hadi only £3O/10/- between them in the betting. Won Easily: Gold. Vaals had had none the best of the running when he narrowly beat Valamito on the first day, nor in the Morningside Handicap, with which the meeting concluded, was he favoured. Yet he won with ridiculous ease by about half a dozen lengths l making a run from well back in the field after passing the half-mile. Day Wind and Kena headed the rest, and then came Merial, who was in the lead with Te Hai and Cheval de Volee, at the straight entrance, King Musk, Crooning, and High Tea. The winner will go a long way. He is by Vaals, whose progeny have been very successful lately in the northern province, from Gold Dart, a daughter of Gohl Bud, and granddaughter of Fraulein, a wellknown pony mare of the last century.
