GREYMOUTH NOMINATIONS THREE MAYORAL CANDIDATES ! Nominations of candidates for the Greymouth Mayoralty, Borough Council, Grey Hospital Board, Grey Power Board, and Grey Harbour Board, closed at noon, to-day, and contests will result in each case, polling day to be Wednesday, May 11. A there-corneredi contest will eventuate for the Mayoralty. The retiring Mayor (Mr W. Meldrum) has decided not to offer his> services for a further term, and the candidates 1 are Messrs P. Blanchfield, junr., a member of the retiring Borough Council; F. A. Kitchingham, a former member of the Council, who unsuccessfully contested the Mayoralty in 1935; and A. H. McKane, the retiring deputy-Mayor. It was known that Messrs Kitchingham and McKane would be candidates and it was expected that Mi’ Meldrum would again enter the lists. A lastminute surprise was the 1 nomination of Mr Blanchfield, and the withdrawal of Mr Meldrum. There will be two “tickets” in the field for the Borough Council election —Citizens and Labour. The Citizens’ candidates are Messrs G. ft. Harker, R. J. Williams, C. Neville (former members), H. Herring, C. H. Rose,

and J. Saunders. Labour nominees are Messrs J. Anderson, T. J. J. Barry, L. B. Hutchison, and J. B. Kent (former member). Other candidates are Messrs F. F. Boustridge and A. H. Paterson (former members). Nine Councillors are required, and there are twelve candidates. Two of the former Councillors, Messrs McKane and Blanchfield, are contesting the Mayoralty, on this occasion. Messrs W. Meldrum (retiring Mayor), and A. M- Carroll (Councillor) are not again contesting the, election. For five seats 1 on the Hospital Board, there are seven candidates. The Citizens’ nominees are Messrs A. Mosley (sitting member), 0. C. Joyce, and J. F. Laing. Labour candidates are Messrs J. B. Kent, A. H. McKane (sitting members), L. B. Hutchison, and W. A. Wallwork. Five candidates l will contest four seats on the Grey Power Board. Labour nominees are Messrs J. B. Kent A. H. McKane (sitting members) T. J. J. Barry and L. B. Hutchison. The remaining candidate is Mr AV. H. Parfitt, who is seeking re-election. Two seats are to be filled by election on the newly-constituted Grey Harbour Board, and there are four candidates, comprising the present Chairman of the Board (Mr P. J. McLean). and Messrs C. G. McKechnie, T. J. J. Barry and J. B. Kent. Mr McKane would have been a candidate in Labour interests, but he has been appointed to the Board as the Government nominee.

The Citizens’ Committee did not nominate candidates for the Power Board or the Harbour Board. At the previous election, in there were three candidates for the Mayoralty, 12 for the Council, 10 for the Hospital Board, and six for the Power Board. 7 MR MELDRUM’S RETIREMENT. AVhen informing the “Star,” to-day, that, he did not. intend' to offer his services for re-election, the retiring Mayor (Mr W. Meldrum) said that, the contest appeared to be assuming a political character, and he had decided to allow younger men to have their innings. So far as the work of tho Borough Council during the past term was concerned, he intended to review it, at the final meeting of the Council, to be held on May 5. RUNANGA NOMINATIONS. MR McTAGGART UNOPPOSED. A good deal of interest is being taken in the elections at Ruuanga, and there will be contests for all seats with the exception of the Mayoralty and Hospital Board representative, the present holder of these positions, Mr R. McTaggart, being returned unopposed'. On the Borough Council, Mr H. Duggan is not seeking re-election, but the remainder of the Council have been nominated for re-election. BRUNNER BOROUGH NO ELECTION NECESSARY No election will be required in the Borough of Brunner, only the required number of candidates being nominated for the various positions, and they will be declared duly elected. All of those nominated for the Council, with the exception of Mr. G. H. S. Eder, are sitting members, and he will fill the vacancy left by Mr. D. Mclvor, who resigned, on account of his departure for another district. The present Mayor, Mr. J. Smeaton. was the only nomination received for the Mayoralty, and likewise, he is unopposed as the representative on the Grey Power Board and the Grey Hospital Board. Mr. Smeaton has also been nominated as the representative for the combined districts of Brunner and Runanga for the Greymouth Harbour Board. The following were nominated for the Borough Council, six being required: —

Walter Barber, George H. S. Eder, Robert S. Fordham, Walter N. Guthberlet, Thomas Harper and Angus Me- - Lagan. GREY COUNTY. SEVERAL ELECTIONS NECESSARY Several elections will be necessary in respect to the Grey County. Seven councillors have been elected unopposed, but in the case of the Nelson Creek riding, where the sitting representative, Mr Arthur Donnellan, retired, two nominations have been received, those of Messrs Thomas Donnellan and William Fisher, and an election will bo necessary. All of the councillors elected unopposed are sitting members, except that Mr G. Blair has been off the Council for some months. The three sitting County representatives on the Grey Hospital Board, Messrs H. G. Carter, J. Mulcare and A. Robinson, have been re-elected unopposed. Only two nominations were received for the two County seats on the Greymouth Harbour Board, those of Mr J. Ryall (a sitting member) and Mr J. Mulcare, who have thus been elected unopposed. An election will be necessary for the three County seats on the Grey Electric Power Board'. One sitting member, Mr A. Robinson, did not seek re-election, but five nominations have been received, those of Messrs J. Mulcare, W. Clayton (sitting members) G. B. Mclnroe, T. Donnellan and W. Fisher. .
