The following motion was passed at the annual session at Wellington of the Grand Orange Lodge:—“As it is becoming a custom to announce - as Nc.w Zealand’s National Anthem the song, ‘God Defend New Zealand,’ and as in Canada, Australia, and South Africa similar efforts are being made to discredit the National Anthem, loyal ’ citizens of the British Empire are urged to repudiate the suggestion that New Zealand has or wishes to have a national anthem other than ‘God Save the King.’ ” The Kotuku general store, owned by Mrs. M. K. Martin, was totally destroyed by fire about ten o’clock last night, the absence of a water supply rendering efforts to save the building impossible. The building, which was of wood, was one of the oldest in the district, having been a landmark for many years. It is understood that the stock was insured for £5OO. The insurances on the building, which is owned by Jack Bros., are held in Christchurch.
