CRUSHING THE “IRON GUARD” HUNDREDS ARRESTED [BY CABLE —PRESS AdSN. —COPYRIGHT-] (Received April 19, 8 a.m.) BUCHAREST; April IS. 1 It is stated' that 1665 of the Iron Guard were arrested, including eight ' priests. The arms seized include five , machine guns. This, alone is a serious offence, as the country is under martial law. General Antonesca has departed for an unknown destination. LATER. The “Telegraph’s” Bucharest correspondent says: As the country is under martial law, the’ arrested will be ccurt-martialled. Such trials must be held and! the sentences passed within forty-eight hours after arrest. Further arrests are continuing, many in German-speaking districts. An official communique states: Several houses were searched and illegal arms discovered, after which a general search of houses of the Iron Guard leaders was ordered. The result fully confirmed the information received - concerning the.• movements planned. It adds: The movement was not beyond the stage of professional agitators, and did not affect the masses in towm and country.
