I PER PBEHB ASSOCIATION'.! PRISONER ESCAPES. - AUCKLAND, April 18. A prisoner who was serving a fiveyear sentence for attempting to discharge a loaded revolver at Detective Whitehead on a city roof-top on July 30, 1934. Colin William Glass, escaped from custody for the second time during his sentence to-night, when he was missed from the Waikeria Institution. A search was promptly organised, but the recapture of the missing inan had not. been, reported at a late hour. RICCARTON OFFENCE CHRISTCHURCH, April 19. When Detective-Sergeant McLung noticed a man writing something at Riccarton races, yesterday afternoon, his suspicions were aroused, and he kept, the man under observation. The detective’s suspicions were con- ' firmed, when he later approached the man and found he was taking bets. The suras ranged from 1/- to 2/6, and a total of 30/- had been collected. The man admitted the offence, but said he was only working on commission. i This was the story told by Detec- I tive Sergeant Holmes, when Joseph, Alfred Gardner, labourer? aged 38, ap-i peared in the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, on a charge of bookmaking. | He pleaded guilty, and was fined ( £lO, with costs, in default three months’ imprisonment. *
