TENNIS

GREAT EASTER TOURNAMENT. FINALS REACHED. The Greymouth Lawn Tennis SubAssociation’s annual tournament was continued over the week-end. on the Greymouth and United courts. . Ideal conditions were experienced on Saturday, and good progress was made in the various sections. Rain yesterday morning.rendered play impossible, but there was a rapid improvement at noon, allowing a large number of games to be played, including several finals, -which were watched by a large gallery. The men’s championship singles was won by R. j<ear, of Christchurch, former United Club champion, who defeated E. Halstead (Grey I in a marathon final. The first set was played at a fast pace. Both players displayed excellent tennis and there was little between them, Kear having slightly the better finishing shots, to take the set 6/4. Halstead started off the second set at a fas,l pace, to take a 4/1 lead, but then Kear reached the peak of his form and evened the score. At this stage the balls became rather light and the standard dwindled, many shots, being lobbed. The score seesawed for a. long time. Kear lasting the better to take the set and the match 14/12. In the final of the wojnen’s championship singles, Miss KI. Tyson (Runahga). who has played consistently well this season defeated Miss M. Costello (Grey), after another long game, in which Miss Tyson’s placements and accuracy were the deciding factors. The women’s championship doubles was won by Misses M. .Costello and M. Tyson, who defeated Mesdames T. Wilson and It. Abbie in the. final. The latter, in the first set, obviously suffered from nervousness, playing on the No. 1 court, and did not play up to the standard they had shown in the earlier matches. They played better in the second set, which was a good tussle, but the net , work of Miss Costello and Miss Tyson’s placements decided the issue.
