John Brissett Clarke, 16, residing at Addington, was, found in the Waimakarirri riverbed, near the Harewood golf links on Saturday evening with a bullet wound in the neck. He died in the Christchurch Hospital this morning. POLO PLAYER INJURED. HASTINGS, February 28. Serious injuries were sustained by lan MacKcnzie, of Havelock North, when his pony fell during a polo match, on Saturday. MaeKenzie was removed to hospital, suffering from severe concussion, add he was still unconscious this morning. ELDERLY MAN’S DEATH. WELLINGTON, February 28. The body of Arthur Stephen Macshene, aged about 60 years, was found in the harbour, near Te Aro baths. It had apparently not been in the water for many hours. BOY DROWNED. AUCKLAND, February 27. A hoy. aged nine, was drowned, and his two companions were saved only by the prompt, action of bystanders when a frail sailing craft capsized in Freeman’s Bay. The victim was Albert Henry Metcalfe. CHRISTCHURCH, February 26. While handling his wireless set, Victor James Hunt, 40, of 19, Cumberland .Street, received a. severe electric shock last evening, and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital in an unconscious condition. He recovered later, and this morning he was reported to be progressing satisfactorily. Ho is not on the seriously-ill list. BOOKMAKERS FINED. WANGANUI, Feb. 28. As a sequel to a police raid, on Saturday, on what is known as “Bookies” Hill, four men, F. J. Lapouple. John. D. Grantham, W. R. Sundborn and David Tuffin, were charged before Mr. Salmon, this morning with carrying on the business of bookmakers. All ' pleaded guilty. Lapouple was fined £l5, Grantham £5, and Sunborn and Tuffin £lO each.

Berryman, of Granj ville Street, Mornington, Dunedin. r DROWNED IN CREEK. WHANGAREI, February 28. John Alfred Moon, 19, of Burnley Terrace, Auckland, was. drowned in a - creek at Oakleigh, yesterday. De- - ceased, with two others, went- swim- - ming, deceased diving. He was seen swimming naturally, but it was then noticed that' his head was under water, and he disappeared. INTOXICATED DRIVERS WELLINGTON, February 28. - In the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr • Hewitt, S.M., James William Allah carrier, 54, was fined £2O, and Thomas William Cox, labourer, 35, was fined £lO, and his license was cancelled for a year, for being drunk while in charge of motor-vehicles. .In Allan’s case, the fine is to be paid at the- rate of £5 per week, and Cox’s at £1 per, week. Counsel for Cox said that defendant though under the influence of liquor had driven safely home, and had been arrested at his own gate.
