FISHING LICENSES.

[TO THE EDITOR.] Sir—ln the “Star” of January - , there is a report, of a meeting of the council of Uie Grey Acclimatisation Society. In that repoit.it ap pears that the council is a effort Io increase the cost of a license to youths over 16 and under ~ ■ years of age to 12/6. Now,, as erally, for a number of years hav had two or three boys undei J** n to buy licenses for I want to ia protest. It should be evident to. the council, that such licenses constitute a charge not on the youths, but on “Dad” whose license has already been increased to 25/-. It seems to me that unless the general public take notice, trout fishing will be put beyond the oi dinarv working man. From observation, too I can imagine that unless we have a more efficient council there will be little or no trout to fish for by anyone, in the vicinity of Greymouth. Even now a license is not worth buying unless for a man who is able to run a car many miles from Greymouth. I think that, if the council would put some more of Hie young trout 1t is offering for sale at 3/- per 1,000 into the Grey, it would improve things a bit _some of them might escape beingeaten by the old ones in the absence of sufficient variety of food natural to trout in their own native waters. However. it seems to me that the council has not yet discovered why it should be necessary to restock such a fine river as the Grey. I have never seen a better fishable river, nor a poorer in quantity of fish. Also, apart from a few bullies, and the whitebait in season, a river poorer in natural trout feed, i.e., flies etc. In conclusion, I think that fishing should be, if possible, as free as the waters that flow in the rivers. I am etc. MARCH BROWN.
