There lias been an excellent response by volunteers anxious to serve in the Territorial Force, and at present. fifteen officers and approximately 70 men are in camp at Trentham from the Wellington Squadron.

PRISON FOR THEFTS. WELLINGTON. January 20.

Two months' imprisonment, was imposed on Charles William Fittes. 26. labourer, by Mr. Hewitt. S.M., on c harges involving theft of goods to the value of £67. He was charged with theft on various dates of a quantity of

clothing. a lady’s handbag - , ornaments and tools, of a total value of £45, from .1. R. McKenzie’s, and a. quantity of elements, electric iron, immersion heaters. soldoring irons, and electrical equipment, of a total value of £22. from Hie National Electric Company. The police offered no evidence on a further charge of thefts from McKenzie’s. io the value of £7/18 A, and this charge was withdrawn.

Mr. and Mrs. .1. Lindsay Myers, of Manila, who are spending a. fishing holiday at Mayor Island, are enjoying excellent, sport. Their total catch to date for a week’s fishing is nine fish, of a- total weight of 2848 pounds. Included in the catch were a 340-pouud striped marlin, caught by Mrs. Myers, and a 558-pouml thresher shark by Mr. Myers.

Both said that, they were greatly impressed with what little of New Zealand they had already seen, and were having better fishing and camping at Mayor Island than they had ever dreamed of. Mr. Myers will remain at Mayor Island till at least January 26. The total catches al Mayor Island to date are 20 sharks and 28 striped marlin. PIC GRADINC WHANGAREI. January lit. The Northland District Pig Council has opposed the new grading regulations which come into force shortly, without length of carcase being taken into account. The following telegram has been sent to the Director-Genei aI of Agriculture: "'rhe Northland Pig Council views with alarm the Gazetting of the pig grading regulations on February 1, with a total disregard to length, and respectfully suggests that the Gazetting be postponed until an opportunity has been’ given to submit further evidence on the necessity of including length in the regulations." The secretary stated that grading without length was a retrograde step, and it would be a big mistake to allow the regulations to be Gazetted as they stood.

LIQUOR SALES

INVERCARGILL. January 19

In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Andrew Allen McKenzie pleaded guilty to two charges of selling liquor in a no-licence area.

Senior-Sergeant W. Kelly explained that on the evening of November 29 a constable had visited the defendant’s residence in Ettrick Street, and had paid 7/- for four bottles of beer. Again on December 1 the constable had paid 3/6 for two bottles. The premises were raided and 115 bottles of beer seized. Receipts found showed that during November accused had obtained more than 400 bottles of beer, and had paid £36 for liquor, pointing to a fairly extensive business. He had previously been fined £lO for keeping liquor for sale.

Defendant, was convicted on each charge, and the fixing of a penalty was adjourned for a fortnight to see what action defendant intended taking to secure employment.
