NOTES ON THE RACING. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] CHRISTCHURCH, January 1. Gay Crusader was made favourite for the Introductory Handicap, and after Chudleigh had made most, of the running Gay Crusader finished in great style and accounted for Esther, while next were Chudleigh and Survivor. The winner had made several promising efforts during the past six months, and now, in J. Bryce’s stable, he has improved a deal. The second favourite, Native Huon, made a disappointing showing, but may soon improve. Another possibility is Triangle. Defeat of Waipahi: Waipahi had not previously been beaten in a saddle race, but in the

Railway Handicap lie more than met his match in Aircraft. Before two furlongs had been covered Aircraft was showing the way to Repeal and Waihapi, and he carried on until , the straight, where Waihapi challenged. The struggle was short and sharp, for Aircraft held his own to win by a length, with Esplendor in third place, finishing better than Repeal. Gamble Shows Speed: Gamble gave a. taste of his real quality when he won the Canterbury Handicap, for he lost up to 48 yards in the first furlong, and with a. sensational run over the last „ part he fairly outclassed the field. First Village Guy and then War Buoy acted as pacemaker, with Cloudy Range 'and Graham Direct nicely placed, and Gamble and Pot Luck bringing up the rear. War Buoy was first into the straight, and very soon six horses were racing abreast with Gamble and Pot Luck putting in great work from the back cf the field. Fifty yards from home Gamble got his head _in front and he finished with rare dash to win by a clear length, while Pot Luck was that distance ahead. It was a great race between good horses. Cloudy Range was disappointing, ond War Buoy, for a proved stayer, faded out rather badly. A Useful Pacer: Great Divide, a four-year-old by Great Bingen, won the Lyttelton Handicap like a good one. With Allworthy, Intrigue, Waitaki Power and Overnight following, he led for the whole journey, 1 and successfully stalled off challenges by Waitaki Power, Moana Tama and Intrigue. It was a performance full of merit, and Moana Tama showed big improvement on his latest efforts. Stewards to Norman Fox: Norman Fox gave a greatly improved display in winning the Stewards* Handicap, for while Lady Sonoma made most of the running, Norman Fox, with a brilliant run from the three furlong post, fairly outpaced Captain Bolt and Golden Eagle, who filled the places. l Norman Fox "was long overdue for a win, which he may repeat soon. An Overdue Win: Southern Smile, with a brilliant finishing run, won the Islington Handicap from Blair Athol and Casanova. Play On made most of the running from Casanova, Southern Smile and Sea Gift, and over the lat ten furlongs this was the order. It was, not until a furlong from home that Southern Smile made her effort, and. she came right away from her field. Blair Athol made up ground in the later stages, and will win shortly. Frisco Lady, to,, is an improver. Ginger Jack’s Return to Form: Ginger Jack lived up to the great reputation he has enjoyed for a long time when he fairly outpaced and outstayed the field in the Templeton Handicap. Credit Funds made practically all the running, and it was not until the straight was reached that Colonel Grattan and Ginger Jack passed the field. There was a hard battle, but. it was short and sharp, and Ginger Jack held a clear advantage at the post. It was a brilliant performance, and he and Colonel Grattan were much superior to the remainder. A Great Record: Plutus scored his seventh win for the season when he won the Au Revoir Handicap. Gallant Knight and Double Great made most of the running, but with a well judged run, Plutus showed too much speed in the concluding stages, and won cleverly. He is an exceptional pacer. Gallant Knight put up a fine battle and was fighting on at. the finish. The best of the others were Agile and Double Great. AUCKLAND TROTS GOLD DREDGE WINS AUCKLAND, December 31. Misty weather developed on the third day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Summer meeting. The attendance was 18,000. The track was fast.
