GREYMOUTH FIGURES

Despite the spurt during- the month of December, there were eight fewer marriage notices issued at Greymou last year than in the previous year, although the total of 143 was the second highest recorded in the past decade. There was an increase of 26 in the number of births, the total of 298 being only one less than the record yeai of 1931. The number of births at Greymouth has not fluctuated much m eithef direction -in the past ten years. The same may be said of the deaths, of which there were 134 last year. OTHER RETURNS ’ GREYMOUTH CUSTOMS Collections at the Customhouse, Greymouth, during the month ol December, 1937. amounted to £13,738 17/2, as compared with £12,861/17/in December 1936. Sales tax amounted to £2,656/9/10, compared with £2,606 14/- and Customs £4.621/18/10 (£5,028/18/4). The total collections for the year 1937 were £144.987/10/8, as compared with £137.805, an increase of £7,182/10/8. Customs amounted to £50,299 as compared with £47,138. Sales tax totalled £31,507, as compared with £27,123.

RAINFALL

The official rainfall figures, from the Harbour Board were: December 1936: 6,16 inches on 16 days. Maximum fall, 143 points on December 10. 1936: 91.95 inches on 204 days. Maximum fall: 15.30 inches in January.
