Olsen, left this morning, for Christchurch. Mr. C. Staples left to-day, on return to Auckland. Miss L. White left this morning, on a Holiday visit to Timaru. Mr. D. Keenan left this morning, on return to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. C. Gardiner left today,. on a holiday visit to Auckland. Mr. M. G. Giraud, Auckland, is visit* ing Greymouth, Mr. P. Manderson, Runanga, left to-day, on a visit to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. N. t. Knell, Waimate, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. James Kennedy, Totara Flat. Mr. and Mrs. R. Evans who have been visiting Runanga, returned this morning to Dunedin. Sergeant J. Carmody, of Napier,' has been transferred to Reefton. Sergeant Carmody will be succeeded at Namier by Sergeant M. Brady, of Auckland. Mr. William Robert Mackness . has been appointed British Resident Minister at Port an Prince, Haiti, succeeding Mr. F. M. Shepherd.—Official Wireless. Sister A. M. Becker, of the staff of the Grey Hospital, has been appointed Matron of the Apia (Samoa) Hospital. Sister Becker will leave Greymouth about the middle of January.
A cablegram from Cannes announced that the Duke of Windsor’s equerry states the report that the Duchess is expecting a “happy event" in the first quarter of 1938 is “entirely without foundation.”
Rev. R. W. W. Alexander has resigned as vicar of St. Paul’s, Murchison, and will soon be leaving for England. He has spent almost eleven years in the back-blocks of the North and South Islands.
Mr. Eden returned to London, yesterday, after a holiday in Yorkshire. He hopes to spend a few days’ more holiday in the South of France, next week, before attending the League Council on January 17. —Official Wireless. ■ •
Hon. P. C. Webb (Minister of arrived from Wellington, at Greymouth this morning, by special plane. He left for Westport this afternoon, but will return to Greymduth to-mor-row, when he will be the guest of the Greymouth Jockey Club, at the Omoto races. / . .

The death has occurred (stated a Dunedin telegram) at the age of 63 years of Mr. James Richmond Rlackie. Born at Ravensbourne, a suburb of Dunedin, he lived for a few years in Invercargill and later in Christchurch, where he raced several trotting horses with success. In 1927 he returned to Dunedin, where.he spent the last few years of his life. He was a member of the West Harbour Borough Council for eight years and was Mayor for two years. He is survived by his widow, one son, and one daughter.
