NEWPORT, June 9

In an elimination trial to select the defender of the America’s Cup against the British challenger, Mr. T. O. M. Sopwith’s Endeavour 11., the Ranger defeated the Rainbow and the Yankee over 30 miles by 4min. 38sec. The Ranger’s time was 3hr. 15min. 23sec., the fastest time in the history of the America’s Cup races.

The annual meeting of the Reefton Bowling Club was held last evening, when there <was a moderate attendance of members. The President, Mr C. Buist, presided. The report, and balance sheet were read and received. The balance sheet showed a very small credit balance on the year’s operations. The President pointed out that at the beginning of last season the Club was faced with a liability for caretaker's wages. He also referred to the small membership of the club, and asked for suggestions for increasing same. The report and balance sheet were received and adopted. The election of officers resulted: — President: M. Ilodgins; Vice-presi-dents, R. McMillan and T. Mori. General and Ground Committee: T. Dellaca, Cleaver, Turner. F. Collis. J. I?.
