R.S.A. DANCE LIQUOR

POLICE INTERVENTION

[per press association.]

WHANGAREI, June 11

Soon, after the commencement of the Hukatere Returned Soldiers’ ball on Wednesday, a posse of police arrived, ’and are alleged to have confls eated a dozen large bottles of beet and a similar number of lemonade. Mr. P. Stratford, president of the Otamatea, U.S.A., said he was at a loss to understand the action of the authorities, as the parent body had never heard anything in the nature of a complaint concerning the conduct of the ball. “You cannot go to a function of this nature anywhere in New Zealand, and not see a claret cup provided for the dancers,” he said, adding that from what he was told, the liquor allegedly confiscated was private property of members of the committee.

He concluded by declaring that the Otamatea Association would stand behind the committee in any action taken.
