Thomas Bowe, married, 33 years of age, was admitted to the Bulled Hospital yesterday suffering from a. broken thigh sustained while he was working in the bush at Dirty Mary’s Creek. Bowe was unlucky, as he had taken up the employment, temporarily. on Wednesday.

At. a. meeting of the committee of the Viest Coast Horticultural Society, it was decided to abandon the proposed chrysanthemum show, on account of the unseasonable weather. It was decided to suggest the planting of a belt of trees at the Recreation Ground, as a Coronation Memorial. A subcommittee was set up to frame rules for the homo garden competition for Mr. F. A. Kitcmhingham’s Cup.

Progress is being made with the erection of the new hall for the State Miners’ Union at Runanga. Mr C. McMillan, the contractor, has seven men on the job; the frame has been completed, and the outside walls are nearing completion.

A shunting mishap occurred in the back shunt near the Cobden bridge about 7.15 o’clock last evening. A rake of U.B. timber wagons, loaded with posts and timber, which had come in on the Hokitika train, were standing in the shunt, with wheels over the trap points when they were opened. As a result one wagon was completely derailed into the cattle stop and two others were partially derailed. It took nearly five hours to restore the wagons to the rails, but as the mishap occurred on the shunting line, the normal train services were not interfered with.

The policy on which the National Party will contest the next Parliamentary election will, not be completely framed for. another two or three months. This was 1 announced, by the Leader of the Opposition (Hon. Adam Hamilton) in an address to friends and supporters of the party at. Christchurch last evening. Mr Hamilton emphasised that it was essential to have the policy supported by all the members of the party, and he anticipated that this approval would be given so that the policy could be announced in about three months. One of the main aims of the party, he remarked, was to endeavour to form public opinion so that no support would be given to any person who tried to split votes.

Thirty-one tons of blasting gelatine and gelignite was used, bringing down approximately 400,000 tons of hydraulic limestone, better known as cement rock. Thirty-three holes were drilled, each 6in in diameter and ranging up to a depth of 275 feet. For seven days a gang of men was engaged in loading the holes with explosives. It was a perfect, explosion, carried out with a degree of efficiency which made the task seem less great than it actually was. The vibration was negligible. The cement industry at Portland will continue for the next few years assured of limestone for cement making.
