TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME February 20 —Winton. Feoruary 20 —Tolaga Bay. February 20, 22—Waikato. February 20, 22—Woodville. February 26, 27—Gore. February 27 —Waiapu. February 27—Opunake. February 27, March I—Te1 —Te Arolia. March 4, 6 —Napier Park. Silver Bond: Silver Bond is a big, long-striding colt, and the going rather than anything else, .helped to beat him at Dunedin. Superex: Superex is taking some time to produce the promise he displayed prior to being added to the list of geldings. Last season Superex won three times, including the Orbeil Champion Hack Handicap TVith 9.0 in 2.8 3-5. He looks sound and well, and may be found training back to winning form at the Autumn meetings. A Solo Player: Antagonist, the sire of Robant s dam, had a meteoric careel* on the turf, and his record is: One start, one win. The win was scored in the Middle Park Plate of 1911. Antagonist was got by Soult from Miss Annie by Seaton Delaval-First Love, by Norden-feldt-Fishgirl by Ya Hendon. At WoodviUe To-morrow: The Auckland correspondent of the “Star” telegraphed to-day that Mandamus will probably be started in the Ruahine Handicap at Woodville tomorrow, in preference to the big race; further, that the Kumeroa Handicap will be the seventh race on the programme at Woodville, and the County Handicap the concluding event.

Woodville Scratchings: Woodville Jockey Club scratchings at 9.30 o’clock yesterday morning were: _Haut llonde and Mandamus in the Woodville Handicap, and at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, Day Dress in the President's Handicap.

Kiccarton Colt for Melbourne: Royal Order, the two-year-old colt by Limond from Anklet, trained at Riccarton by A. McAulay, is to do his future racing in Melbourne. Last night negotiations for the lease of the colt were completed by Mr G. J. Barton, and he has been taken over with an option of purchase from Mr J. Richardson, of Dunedin. Royal Order will leave for the south almost immediately to join the other members ot Mr Barton’s team which are to leave soon for Melbourne.

Seafox for South: Mr G. Hutter, of Auckland, has disposed of Seafox to Mr A. Ferguson of Dunedin, and Seafox will be sent south next week, probably in company with Heloise and Pink Robe, which horses J. S. Shaw intends to race at the Gore meeting. Mr Ferguson has already met with considerable success with a former member of Shaw s stable, in McHeath. McHeath is trained at Wingatui by J. W. Dooley, so possibly Seafox will enter the same stable on his arrival at Wingatui.

Francis Drake: Francis Drake is reported to be looking better than ever and his work at Woodville has been most pleasing to his connections. Mr Frank Armstrong’s colt will next be under silk in the North Island Challenge Stakes to be run at Trentham next month, it is possible that this race will bring together' the North Island’s best colt and Haughty Winner, who is at present recognised as the best colt in the South Island. Should Francis Drake and Haughty Winner meet, their respective weights will be 7-12 and 7.7.

Gallops at Canfield: On the Caulfield tracks, Gold Rod Beechwood, and Cuddle covered the Futurity Stakes distance ot seven furlongs, with the honours to Gold Rod, who ran the first half-mile in 49isec, and the full journey in 1.294. Cuddle’s time was 1-291. Country Party’s display was better than on Tuesday, this horse beating Birthday Boy over five furlongs 1.21. AT TE RAPA TO-MORROW. PROGRAMME AND PROSPECTS. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME February 20 —New Brighton. February 26 —Marlborough. February 27 —Kaikoura. February 27 —Roxburgh. Like the Course: Royal Parrish, who cannot be termed an improver, and Gay Crusader are two trotters in the; opening event at New Brighton, who usually race well on the course. Won Like a Champion: Sir Kit, who won like a champion at the last Timaru meeting, is bred to trot, being by Great Audubon from a Rothschild mare. He is in the Improvers’ Handicap, at New Brighton to-morrow. Flying Handicap: Double Great, Morello, Pot Luck, Village Guy, and George Rey are all recent winners in the mile and a half Flying Handicap. This should provide a close race, with only a 24 yards limit. Double Great, Pot Luck, and Morello appeal. The Mile Saddle:

Lone Derby, Happy Knight, Royal Comrade, and On Parade are all proven saddle horses in the mile saddle at New Brighton to-morrow, while Racketeer has shown improved form lately. Plutus has shown himself a fiine pacer, on occasion, and' may do it right all the way, with the weight ulp. Happy Knight, On Parade and Racketeer may be the final summing up. Bittersweet Fancied.:

Bittersweet has been most consistent since going into F. C. Dunleavey’s care, and will be the favourite in the two mile trotting -event at New' Brighton to-morrow. She is a fine trotter, and a great beginner. Kuini has never been in better form than at present. Indolent, and Captain Bolt look to be held safe by Kuini. Helen’s Bay is consistent, and Waikato Prince a good trotter. Bittersweet should be first choice, with Helen’s Bay and Kuini for the places.

Interesting Candidate: An interesting entrant for the Improvers’ Handicap at New Brighton to-morrow, is the royally-bred Gerfalcon (Wrack —Nantwich), who performed so well at Nelson, and'later at Hutt Park. He is solid and consistent, and on Nelson fast track, he did times that would win this race easily. He will be opposed by some seasoned performers to-morrow, but can be depended upon to race well- He is one of th-Q best improvers.

The Big Event: Gallant Knight will be a warm favourite for the Denton Memorial, on the strength of recent winning form. Thia American-bred horse has great pace, and stamina, and on only 12 yards behind, has a royal show. Isabel Derby beat Gallant Knight at Timaru, rather luckily, but she races well on the grass, and will not lack support. She is. a form horse. Hooper will have Big. Author to carry his colours, but he is a horse of moods. He won well at Forbulry, on the first day, and stays- well on his day. Grace McElwyn, Raydus, and- Queen Author are consistent performers, with Raydus probably the pick. Grace McElwyn is not yet at her best. Recess is very consistent, while Guy Junior is a good stayer. Llewellyn’s. Pride won really well at Addington last week, and is a good " place fancy. Tempest will need all the. luck in this field, which should provide a great contest. It looks like Gallant Knight, Isabel Derby and Llewellyn’s Pride.

TRIALS AT ADDINGTON. NEW BRIGHTON CANDIDATES. The weather was fine, and the Addington course in good order yesterday morning, when a number of New Brighton candidates were worked. Kuini trotted two miles in an attractive manner in 4.42 2-5 from a standing start. She did the first two furlongs in 40, half-mile in 1.15 2-5, mile in 2.261-5, mile and a-half in 3.34 1-5, mile and three-quarters in 4.8, and the full distance in 4.42 2-5. She finished exceptionally well, and has never looked better, or trotted better in her training work. War Path and Midshipmaid paced a mile and a-half comfortably in 3.26 3-5, after taking 2.19 to cover the first mile. Navy Blue and Chili Bean had three seconds’ start from Agility in a bout over a mile and a-half. Navy Blue made the pace and was not extended to record 3.31. Chili Bean had hjs head in front of her at the winning post, and Agility was only a halflength behind Navy Blue. He registered 3.28 3-5. Tempest made the pace for Bittersweet in a good effort over two miles. The first two furlongs occupied 36, half-mile 1.112-5, mile 2.211-5, mile and a-half 3.31, and Bittersweet came homo in lino style in 4.37 1-5. She trotted the last two furlongs in 33 1-a. Purina paced two miles in 4.47, and Tarn and Marie Louise left a mile and a-half behind in 3.24 2-5. Little Reta and Raydus were responsible for two miles in 4.35. Little Reta made one break, but. soon regained her balance, and was trotting strongly at. the finish. Aircraft, moved in good style while negotiating a mile and a-hall in .i.2.> 2-5.

Bill B and’ Starwyn dashed over a mile in 2.15. Gaynor beat Esther over a mile and a-half in 3.311-5. Both trotters worked well, but Gaynor was too good for her companion. Loyal Betty paced a mile and a-half in 3.35 3-5. Chancellor was not allowed to do his best while covering two miles in 4.48 2-5. Bide-a-Weo accounted for a mile and a-half in 3.23 3-5. Lone Derby went a mile and a-quar-tcr in saddle in 2.59.

TROTTING AT NEW BRIGHTON. TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS. [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, February IS. Rig fields at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting will bo a feature of Saturday’s racing, and with few counter attractions the fixture should bo a very successful one. In the Denton Memorial Handicap, a field of

-13 useful horses should provide a good "race, and 'while Gallant Kn'ffit :is already a warm favourite Die , chances of others must be conside: id. The win and place system of betting will be in operation. The day’s programme is as follows. 12.30 y.m. Improvers’ Handicap, unhoppled trotters, 3.43 class, one mile and flhalf—Cracksman, Esther, Royal Parrish, Sagamore, Thor scr. Gay Crusader, Gerfalcon, Royal Romance, Sir Kit 12; Gaynor, Mother’s Boy 24; Harvest Dillon, Sphinx 3G; Billy Sundy, Bosun, Renegade, Triangle 48; Golden Eagle, Prince Harvester, Sonoma King 60. The field for the Improvers’ Handicap is likely to provide a better class of race than is usually featured at New Brighton, for while the backmarkers are 60 yards behind, several on the limit have shown winning form, and a promise of still better things to come. Some interest will centre in the performance of the. three-year-old trotter Gerfalcon, whose running at Nelson and Wellington showed him as solid and consistent. Gay Crusader and Royal Parrish have previously shown a liking for the big New Brighton course, and both smart beginners, they will be in the picture throughout. Sir Kit won at the Timaru meeting, and Bosun and Renegade may prove the best of those back in handicaps. The popular fancies may be — GAY CRUSADER, GERFALCON, ROYAL PARRISH.

1.5 p.m. Belfast Handicap, 3-39 class, one mile and a-half. —Big Nelson, Colonel Grattan, Cruiser, Garment, Heather Queen, Loyal Direct, Native Son, Our Fay, Poste Haste, Purina, Sans Peur, Savoldi, Starwyn, Tarn scr.; Ace High, Black Marble, Boltaire, Intrigue, Lord Axworthy, Olive King, War Path Windsor Lass 12; Fine Art, Moerewa 24; Dundee 36. Improving pacers comprise the field for the Belfast Handicap, and the majority are capable of improving a good deal on the times they are assessed to do. More than half the acceptors are on the limit, and of these the best may be Heather Queen. Savoldi, Our Fay, and Starwyn, but while the handicapped horses will have nothing in their favour Ace High, Black Marble, and Intrigue dri 12'yards will have many friends, and Fine Art on 24 yards behind is a pacer above the average. The favourites may be — ACE HIGH, HEATHER QUEEN, STARWYN. 1.45 p.m. Denton Memorial Handicap, 4.30 class, two miles. —Big Author, Grace McElwyn, Guy Junior, Isabel Derby, Raydus scr.; Gallant Knight, Gold Tinge, Gunfire, Queen Author, Recess 12; Gold Country, Llewellyn’s Pride 24; Tempest 48. Gallant Knight is already a very warm favourite for the Denton Memorial Handicap, and while lie is possibly entitled to the honour he will be called on to meet some very useful pacers capable of going two miles at a good speed. Big Author, on scratch, is O. E. Hooper’s elect, and on his day he stays particularly well. Isabel Derby defeated Gallant Knight at Timaru and while she may have been lucky, it would not surprise if she repeated the performance. Queen Author would be better suited by a dirt track and though Gold Country looks particularly well he is not regarded as a good stayer. Llewellyn’s Pride has recent, winning form to recommend him and lie should at least fill a minor place. The placings may be — GALLANT KNIGHT, LLEWELLYN’S PRIDE. ISABEL DERBY.

2.20 p.m. Stewards’ Handicap, 4.40 class, two miles.—Play On scr.; On Parade, Red Flyer 12; Air Flow (T.), Kibo, Valdor 24; Ciro, Real Burton 36; Mystery Yet, Navy Blue 48. A small field in the Stewards’ Handicap may provide one of the best races of the day for included are several very useful pacers. While last Saturday’s racing at Addington cannot be taken as a reliable guide, Play On’s performance in running second to U. Scott cannot be overlooked. Play On, a seasoned racehorse, may prove a good winner before the season is ended. Red Flyer and On Parade from L. Davidson’s stable are sure to bo in demand, and Kibo, Valdor, Mystery Yet and Navy Blue can be depended upon to race solidly over two miles. The. favourites may include — PLAY ON, KIBO, RED FLYER. 2.55 p.m. Eclipse Handicap, 3.0 class, one mile and a-quarter.—Alpine Prince, Ann Pointer, Chateau, Colleen Wrack, De la Paix, Fine Art, Heather Queen, Icevus, Lucejss, Molly Direct, Moerewa, Olive King, Prince de Oro, Red Ranger, Shrewdie, Silk Bonny scr.; Agility, Dundee, Purveyor, Toorak 12; Aircraft, Civic, Elite Rey, Rustle (T.) 24; Rewai 36; Decoy Bird, Hidden Charm 48. A field of 28 horses in th© Eclipse Handicap of a mile and a quarter will not encourage very keen speculation but the bigger the field the bigger the certainty may apply in this case. Luck in the running and the draw for positions will have a big effect on the result. Fine Art appears nicely placed on the limit and Molly Direct’s running will be watched with interest. De hi Paix. a. Jack Potts youngster is a likely sort, and the horses mentioned may prove the best of the limit division. Of the handicapped horses Toorak may prove the best. There will probably be a wild scramble, for positions over the early part, and horses handily placed from the start will have everything in their favour. Backers mav favour the chances of — MOLLY DIRECT, FINE ART, RED RANGER.

3.30 p.m. Autumn Handicap, unhoppled trotters, 4.50 class, two miles. —Captain Bolt, Enigma, Guy Hugo. Indolent, Kuini scr; Bittersweet 12; Helen’s Bay 21; Header 3G; Waikato Prince 48; Little Beta GO. Bittersweet will probably be favourite for Hie Autumn Handicap, for Mr Barton's maro has proved herself during the season, and handily placed on 12 yards, she .should have little difficulty in holding her own. Guy Hugo failed to handle the slushy going at. Addington on Saturday, but on a grass track his prospects appear

brighter. Waikato Prince is also a possibility. The placings may be — BITTERSWEET, GUY HUGO, WAIKATO PRINCE. 4.5 p.m. Flying Handicap, 3.22 class, one mile and a-half.—Aristotle, Chancellor, Double Great, Morello, scr.; Pot Luck, Village Guy, Young Frank 12; George Rey, Grace McElwyn. Raydus, Recess, Reporter 24. Village Guy was allowed to forfeit his. engagement in the principal event, but he will be well supported in the Flying Handicap in which a strong field is engaged. Double Great whose form, has been outstanding, will be well suited by the journey, and Pot Luck’s last effort was impressive. A short limit of 24 yards will give- every horse a chance, and a great race may be expected. The order may be—DOUBLE GREAT, POT LUCK, VILLAGE GUY. 4.40 p.m. Final Handicap (in saddle), 2.16 class, one mile. —Admiral Wrack, Chenaway, Lone Derby, Matchmaker, On Parade, Plutus, Rackateer scr; Ciro, Golden Cross, Treasure Bond Wilbur White 12; Happy Knight, Royal Comrade, Worthy King 36. - Horsemanship will play a big part in the decision of the Final Handicap, and if H. Marshall rides Happy Knight the black pacer should be favourite. Plutus is one to be considered and Racketeer may redeem his early promise. This race should be full of interest and the places filled by— HAPPY KNIGHT, ON PARADE. PLUTUS,
