WELLINGTON, February 19. A gorse fire at Pahatanui caused a flash-over in the main transmission line, and the surge tripped certain equipment at Manawatu Sub-Station. No power was available at Wellington for half-an-hour. WELLINGTON, February 19. Fred Crossley, 59, veterinary surgeon, was fined £2O at Petone, to-day, for intoxication when in charge of a car. His license was cancelled for. six months. WELLINGTON, February 19. Injunctions restraining certain bottle dealers from refusing to return to brewing and bottling companies or their agents at market rates, bottles issued by brewers and bottlers, were granted by the Chief Justice in a reserved judgment to-day. Broadly, he held that the bottles bearing the imprint of the companies -which issued' them belonged to those companies, and in the case before the Court, were returnable on demand, providing the companies paid a market reward for their care and collection by bottle dealers.

LONDON, February 18. • “The Times’s” city editor, commenting on the fall in gilt-edged and other high-grade investments, points out that the drop has brought out more buyers, especially in the 3A per centum war loan, which has held its price well. The maiket is expected to recover now that Mi. Chamberlain has disclosed his plan. Meanwhile the fall in British funds is sufficiently substantial appreciably to increase the yields. Accordingly, all classes of investments are undergoing a. downward adjustment. He adds, apropos of expectations of increased taxation, that the revenue should be sufficiently buoyant next year, to ensure an appreciable increase, at the present level of taxation. The “Daily Herald” states that, the values of the ordinary shares of 19 shipbuilding, aircraft, armament and steel firms have risen by £4,640,000 to £88,168,000 since February 10. or £128,,000 for every hour wherein business was done on the Stock Exchange.
