Sutton James Hemmings, aged 31, a resident of Umutoi, suffered a fracture of the skull when the car he was driving overturned on the Palmerston North-Ashhurst road yesterday afternoon, and he died in hospital. His father, who was accompanying him, was not hurt. It is believed that a tie-rod became loose. The cai‘ wobbled from side to side and then turned over. It is thought that a lifting jack in the car struck Hemmings on the head. MAN AND BABY KILLED. WHANGAREI, February 17. As the result of a collision between a sports car and a light truck, near Kaikohe, yesterday afternoon, Joseph Whitefield, 47, married, with two grown-up children, received head injuries, from which he died in the Rawene Hospital, early this morning. The six weeks-old infant child of Mr. and Mrs. George Dalton, who were passengers in the truck, which was driven by Jack Etiha, also died this morning. The mother and father were badly bruised. Murray Boyd, the driver of the car in which Whitefield was a passenger, escaped with a scratch on the nose. MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED. TIMARU, February 17. Apparently while looking round, and trying to hook up the rear-stand of his motor-cycle, which was dragging, Ivan Rawson, 20, railway porter, collided with a telegraph post near the Commercial Hotel, suffering severe injuries, from which he died a few hours later. CYCLIST INJURED. INVERCARGILL, February 16. Miss Joy Rose, of Forest Hill, was knocked down by a. car driven by 11. A, Edmonds, Dunedin, this afternoon, while walking across Dee Street, at the intersection with Don Street. She suffered a fracture of the left leg, and was admitted to the Southland Hospital.
