HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] HOKITIKA, December 21. The carnival season opened in Hokitika on Saturday in fine weather. An unusual number of people were in town, which with its gaily coloured lights, gave it the carnival touch. In the evening, on a platform erected for the purpose, near Lloyd’s corner, a Maori party from Arahura, under Messrs Tainui and Webb, contributed a pleasing entertainment of songs, choruses and dances. Following them camo the Hokitika Municipal Band (under Mr C. B. Ross), which also provided a programme. During the progress of this, a procession, organised by Mrs J. A. Murdoch, paraded the streets. This procession consisted of several tableaux, Biitannia (Mation Anderson), and a retinue of attendants occupied one lorry. The “Divine Quins,” with Dr. Dafoe and a. host of nurses; another, causing much amusement. A Venetian Gondola. and other items all went to make up an interesting section of the revels. Funds for the equipment of the new children’s ward at the Westland Hospital is the primary reason for the carnival.
