[SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] AUCKLAND. October 21. While Cuddle’s victory at Otaki, has caused her stock for the Auckland Cup to harden, there is a strong body of opinion in Auckland, which will not be shifted from a loyal stand by Flood Tide, who is expected to provide, with the brilliancy he manifested in the Mitchelson Cup, the necessary stamina to traverse the extra half-mile successfully. For all that, Cuddle is expected to be a worthy opponent. In spite of his failure to win, the known staying powers of Master Brierly ate believed not to have diminished, although some of his dash may have, gone, and .in a truly run race, he must take part in the finish. The records reveal that ordinary Cup form in tlfe province has been useless in the past, in indicating the Auckland Cup winner, and. for that reason, students are not moving their eyes beyond the recognised stayers, who are naturally at the top of the handicap. Under conditions favouring lightweights, Scotland. Dark Shadow, and Mungatoon may have chances, but under fine conditions, speculators may prefer Flood Tide, Cuddle, and Master Brierly. GOLDEN SHEILA FAVOURED.

From the receipt of the handicaps, Golden Sheila has been a definite favourite for the Railway Handicap, and all discussions point to its being a contest between mares, for her most Quoted rivals are Namakia, Galilee, and Oratory. If the. last- named, who has just arrived at Ellerslie, gives a good account of herself this week, her position will improve rapidly. However, there is no reason to suggest that Golden Sheila is not entitled to favouritism, at present. She has been working brilliantly, at Te Aroha, and, on Saturday, she ran an effortless half mile, alongside Mungacre, in 50 secs. She is not to be taken to headquarters till Thursday.
