QUEENSLAND GOVERNOR BRISBANE, August 11.

An announcement is expected from the Dominions Office of the re-appoint-ment of Sir Leslie Wilson, as Governor of Queensland for a further term, which means that the agitation for the appointment of a local governor has failed.

The King has approved Sir Leslie Wilson’s appointment to the Governorship of Queensland for a second term for five years from June 13.

TENNANT’S CREEK GOLD. CANBERRA, August 11

Official advice has been received from the Tennant’s Creek goldfield, Central Australia, that traces of gold have been discovered in iron ore at a depth of between 200 and 300 feet, which was located by geophysical means. The discovery is regarded as most important, because it indicates that, instead of the field being a shallow one with a short life, values might be found at a considerable depth.

MARKETING CONTROL. CANBERRA, August 12.

The Federal Cabinet discussed the dislocation of marketing legislation as the result of the Privy Council decision. Cabinet had the benefit of Mr. Menzies’ assistance, but after eight hours’ deliberation, was unable to reach a conclusion whether a referendum should be held early in the new year, or in conjunction with the general election at the end of next year. The matter will now be referred to the Premiers’ conference at Adelaide.

OIL FROM COAL.

CANBERRA, August 11.

It is officially announced that Sir Harry McGowan, Chairman of Directors of the Imperial Chemical Industries. is visiting Australia at the end of tlie year, when the Commonwealth Ministry intends to discuss with him plans for the future production of oil from coal.

Imperial Chemical Industries informed the Government in 1933 that it would be prepared to operate a plant in Australia with a capacity of forty million gallons a year. The cost of the plant is estimated at eight to ten millions sterling. In addition the Commonwealth Government would have to forego a substantial proportion. if not the whole excise, on the petrol produced.
