SUNDAY ISLAND
KETCH-OWNER’S ENTERPRISE.
[PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.]
AUCKLAND, August 11.
Advice received by friends in Auckland from Mr. V. Venables, owner of the ketch Yvonne, which left Sydney on July 30, indicates that the vessel may be used to establish a settlement on Sunday Island, where Messrs. A. Bacon and B. Robertson went to live last year. The Yvonne will make a call at Sunday Island, the largest of the Kermadec group, on her present voyage to Auckland, and Mr. Venables’s son, Mr. A. Venables, and two others of the crew of six, will be left there. Before the departure of the Yvonne from Sydney it was announced that she would make a. two-year’s cruise of the world, but advice received in Auckland from Mr. Venables is that if there is any chnace of making a. reasonabale success of the venture on Sunday Island the vessel will probably go from Auckland to the island frequently. When Mr. Venables left Auckland nearly two years ago he intended to find a boat in Australia to take Mr. Bacon and his party to Sunday Island, but as he was unable to secure a suitable vessel at that time the party was taken by Mr. J. W. Wray last year in the Ngataki. Mr. Venables is not travelling by the Yvonne, but is expected to arrive at Auckland with his wife and two daughters by the Wanganella on Friday. The letter from Mr. Venables stated that the Yvonne would probably arrive at Auckland about the end of the month, but this would involve a long stay near the unsheltered Sunday Island, as she is already 14 days out from Sydney. The vessel is under the command of Mr. J. Sorensen, with Mr. E. King as mate, while Messrs. J. Ashwood, A. Venables, J. Boshier, and D. Angus comprise the crew.
NORWEGIAN CRUISE
AUCKLAND, August 11
In continuation of her world cruise the Norwegian yacht Ho Ho left Auckland for Norfolk Island to-day. The Ho Ho arrived at Auckland from Norfolk Island on July 5. In addition to the three Norwegian owners. Messrs T. Schyborg, B. Bryhn, and T. Ostmoen, the Ho Ho carried three passengers, who were brought from Norfolk Island last month. After landing these passengers on the island, the Ho Ho will leave for Panama Canal. She will probably make calls at Tahiti, Galapagos Islands, and Ecuador before passing through the Canal. It is the intention of the Norwegians to return to their own country within a year.
