Trotting

MEETINGS TO GOMEL

August 8, 12, 14.—N.Z. Metropolitan. August 15.—Cambridge. August 29—Auckland.. September s.—New Brighton. September 12. —Wellington. October 3—Methven. October 10.—New Brighton. October 17.—Waikato. October 17, 19.—Westport. October 24, 26.—Auckland. October 24, 26.—Greymouth. October 26. —Manawatu. October 26.—Oamaru. October 31.— Wellington. Now at the Trot: • Calumet Evelyn, the mare that last year astounded the world by trotting a mile in two minutes after having paced a racing mile in Imin 59Jsec., is now performing at the trot. Last year she iiad a highly successful career as a hoppled pacer, and it was to prove her adaptability that the hopples were discarded, and the mare asked to trot. She is the only horse, regardless of sex, to do two minutes at either gait,, and already this season has twice won at her new gait. At her first start of the season she trotted two winning heats in 2min 12Jsec and 2 min 13 sec. and in the third heat was interfered with. A few days later the mare trotted two winning heats in 2min 9ssec. and 2min 9sec., and will undoubtedly put up fast time as the season advances.

E. N. Kennerley Returns: E N. kennerley returned from Sydney this week -with the trotting mare Princess Onyx. It is his intention to take quarters at Epsom, and there is every chance of his increasing his team with several new additions from the south. Kennerley has been in Australia for nearly two years, and has met with a great deal of success. During the past season he drove 30 winners, gaining five successes with Red Direct and four with Remember Me. Commenting on trotting conditions in Australia Kennerley said that the sport was definitely booming in both Western and South Australia, an added fillip being the likelihood of several entrants from the Dominion for the Australasian championship to be held at Adelaide next January. The horses raced on the other side were of good class, and he is of the opinion that Lawn Derby is one of the best pacers he has seen. “When he won the Harold Park Handicap recently Lawn Derby put up one of the best performances of his career, and only a good horse could have gained success. The race is run on a three-lap to the mile tiqck, and Lawn Derby was 36yds. behind. He absolutely outclassed the opposition, and then registered 3min 20 4-5 sec,” said Kennerley. “I was talking to W J O’Shea, the trainer of Lawn Derby, just‘after his success, and by the way he spoke there is practically no doubt that the Australian champion will visit Addington for the New Zealand Trotting Cup Meeting,” he added. Asked about the Victorian horse New Derby, Kennerley said be had great speed, but I?as inclined to be erratic at the start, and he was just as likely to stay at the barrier as strike a gait. Kennerley’s charge, Princess Opy*> was only sent to Sydney about a month ago, but was not raced. fane won a couple of races at the trotting gait, one at New Brighton and another at Greymouth, but it is the intention of her trainer to change her oyer to the pacing gait, and she has already been working with the straps.
