ALBERTA CERTIFICATES.

EDMONTON. August 5.

Mr. William Aberhart (Premier of Alberta) put the first “prosperity certificates” into circulation to-day issuing 250,000 one-dollar tokens taxable at a cent a week and redeemable in Dominion money within two years. The bulk of the issue is consigned to various road construction projects. Many business bodies declared they would not accept the certificates, but the Government intimated that, if successful, the scrip would be the forerunner of social credit dividends.

DARDANELLES

ANGORA, August 6.

The Assembly voted five million Turkish pounds for the refortification of the Dardanelles, whereof £1,200,000 is to be expended on guns and ammunition.

JAPS AND WOOL.

TOKIO, August 6.

The Japanese Federation of Woollen Weavers’ Guilds has petitioned the Department of Commerce to restrict imports of British woollen goods. The Japanese merchants allege that largely on account of the Australian trade controversy, there has been a sharp rise in woollen goods prices, and the British traders are trying to seize the opportunity to recover lost ground. It is believed that if the market remains firm, imports of British piece goods will reach a value of £600,000, which is double last year’s total.
