WATERSIDE PEACE. NAPIER, July 22
The Napier waterfront dispute has been settled. The men are hack at work to-day. It is announced that tin arrangement “satisfactory to both parties’ had been reached. The strike had been in progress since July 13.
COMPENSATION AWARD. WELLINGTON, .Inly 21
Holding that the plaintiff was entitled' to succeed, Mr Justice Johnston, in the Supreme Conn, gave judgment for the full amount claimed, £llB9 15/-, to Leonard Philip Parker Double, a carpenter, of Petone, against August Victor Swanson, a builder and contractor. of Wellington. The claim arose as the result of Double being injured in a scaffolding accident while employed by the defendant on Todd Motors’ building, Petone, on January 9, 1934.
ELECTION DEPOSIT
TIMARU, July 21
A writ directing the Timaru Borough Returning Officer to return to him a deposit. of £lO, he had lodged when noiminuting for the Timaru Mayoralty, and from which he voluntarily withdrew a day later than the specified seven clear days, was sought by Charles Eustace Kerr. Mr. Justice Northcroft made an order for the return of lhe deposit. He said that, he was unable to accept the view of the Audit Department, that the deposit was not returnable because of the position created by the candidate himself. He pointed out that the ■•time attitude might be adopted if a Returning Officer died before an election. or did not conduct an election as he should have done. He thought it proper, in view of public notice that had been taken of the matter, to state that the Statute was defective to deal with the situation, and the Returning Officer had acted quite sensibly and properly in the course which he adopted.
