GREYMOUTH RETURNS

VITAL STATISTICS. Greymouth vital statistics for June, 1936, with comparisons with June last year, in parentheses, were: —Births 13 (IS); deaths 9 (5); marriage licenses issued 9 (7); marriages by Registrar The vital statistics for the halfyear, ended yesterday, were; Births 111 (129), deaths 47 (46); marriage notices issued 65 (53); marriages by Registrar 9 (7). CUSTOMS FIGURES. Total collections at the Customshouse, Greymouth, during June, amounted to £11,333/9/5, an increase of £2,512/17/4 over the collections (£8,820/12/1) in June last year. Customs duties amounted to £3,834/17/8 (as compared with £3,027/13/7 last June), sales tax £2,293/11/10 (£1,787 10/9). . The figures for the half-year, with comparisons, were: —Total collections £67,806/5/8 (£59,732/14/4); customs £24,016/12/6 (£19,443/5/5); sales tax £12,430/4/1 (£10,602/12/8). RAINFALL LOWER. Fifteen- -days’-rain -at Greymouth during June, produced 532 points, the highest fall for any one day being 186 points on June 28. In June last year there were 19 days’ rain for a total of 851 points. Rain fell on 39 days during the past quarter for a total of 1644 points, as against 50 days’ rain and 2788 points in the second quarter of last year. During the past half-year the total rainfall was 3487 points on 82 days, compared with 5591 points on 20 days in’ the corresponding period of last year. SHIPPING INCREASE. During June, 30 vessels aggregating 11,804 tons, entered the port of Greymouth, as compared with 18 arrivals (9.400 tons) in June last year. There were 31 departures last month, aggregating 13,116 tons, as against 19 departures (8,219 tons), in the corresponding period of 1935. There were 74 arrivals (38,059 tons) and 75 departures (37,874 tons) in the second quarter of this year, compared with 61 arrivals (34,320 tons) and 60 departures (31,689 tons) in the corresponding quarter of last year. During the first six months, of this year there were 143 arrivals (67,113 tons) and 143 departures (64,120 tons), 'tn the first six months of last year, 131 vessels entered the port and 129 departed. DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, June 30.

An encouraging increase in the value of imports into t'he port of Dunedin is disclosed when returns for the past month and for the first quarter ofxthe current financial year are compared with those for the corresponding periods of 1935. Following are' the figures for June, shillings and pence omitted, together with comparative figures for the same month in 1935, in parentheses: Customs duty £57,111 (£42,837); beer duty £21,982 (£14,469); sales tax £22,918 ((£20,266); petrol tax, £12,220 (£10,930); tyre tax. £960

(£491); gold duty £2417 (£1462). Returns for the first quarter of the current financial year, together with comparative figures for the corresponding period of last year, are as follow: Customs duty 1 , ■ £163,336 (£153,910).; beer duty £58,036 (£.51,252); sales tax £69,806 (£60,503); petrol tax, £38,932 (£41,121); tyre tax, £1866 (£2193); gold duty £6280 (£5229).

AUCKLAND INCREASES

AUCKLAND, June 30.

General increases are shown in the Customs and other taxation figures for Auckland for the first six months of the present year, as compared with the corresponding period of last yeai’, and also for June, as compared with June, 1935. The figures for June are as follow, last year’s results being in parentheses:— Customs, £238,626 (£180,647); Petrol and tyres, £56,215 (£36,728); Excise on beer, £13,957 (£8,493); sales tax £62,445 (£57,249). The figures for six months, as compared with the same period of last year, are as follow: Customs £1,505,149 (£1,248,563); motor spirit and tyres, £397,314 (£394,675); excise on beer £77,674 (£64,910); Sales tax £394,605 (£324,977)
