Because she is 581 b. heavier than the United States Department of Labour officials consider that she should b’?, an English woman, Miss Nora Lee, who has been staying with friends at New Bradford since last August, has been refused permission to remain in this country with a. view to becoming an American citizen.
Miss Lea weighs 12st. 21b. According to American health charts a woman of her age and height should weigh only Sst.
Officials maintain that her excessive weight might make it difficult for her to find emplojTnent and* that, as a result, she might become a public charge. To support their argument they draw
attention to a recent case which has received great publicity. In this, a woman teacher in New York State was, dismissed by the education authorities because she failed to "reduca” ade, quately.
