BOXING

CANZONERI v. McLARNIN. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] NEW YORK, May 8. Tony Casoneri in a ten-round contest won the decision at Madison Square Garden to-night from Jimmy' McLarnin, the Canadian. The weights were:—Canzoneri 136 Albs and McLarnin 1431b5. The decision of Referee Donovan and the two judges were unanimous. According to a newspaper compilation, Canzoneri won eight of the ten rounds, and by the end of the sixth had' piled up such a commanding points lead that only a knock-out by McLarnin could have altered' the decision. Because of his weight advantage and other considerations, McLarnin was tiie favourite when he entered the ring.

From the opening gong Canzoneri forced the fight. His efforts at first were not successful when, in the first round McLarnin cut a gash in his nose and beat him severely to gain an early advantage. After that Canzoneri, fighting a game and fearless battle, had things almost his own way. His clever well-directed blows scored, and gradually he wore down McLarnin’s resistance. The Canadian came up smiling in the 10th round, hut he was “through.” All that remained was his instinct to fight. Canzoneri crashed a right to his. jaw, which sent McLarnin reeling, and almost down. For the remainder of the round Canzoneri swung freely in an effort to score a knock-out, but McLarnin, although his offensive was shattered, managed to hold his feet. Sixteen thousand witnessed the bout, and paid 85,000 dollars.
