“I am quite prepared to believe that every man in this hall put his name on the census paper as head of the house,” said Mrs. G. G. Hancox, speaking at a fathers’ evening held by the Palmerston North branch of the League of Mothers. Amid laughter, she added: “We mothers are not going to mind that as long as it is only on paper.”

“This class of offence is a great nuisance, especially at night time when people are trying to sleep.” commented Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate’s Court during the hearing of a charge against a motor cyclist of failing to attach an efficient silencer to his machine. "In some parts it has been found necessary to cancel the license for a short period and inflict a heavy line. I am referring only to the class of cases where it is deliberately done.” he added.

“It seems to be the general impression that for a lodger in a hotel to take a guest into the private bar for a drink after hours is a breach of the law, but that is not so provided the guest does not pay,” submitted Mr. Ross in the Police Court at Whangarei on Monday, when a hotel licensee was charged with exposing liquor for sale after hours. The whole position, said Mr. Ross, was that a local business man dined that night with a prominent Wellington business man, who was staying at the hotel, and just after dinner they had one drink served them in the bar at the suggestion of the lodger. The licensee was not present. “As I understand the position,” said the Magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, “there is no breach as long as the lodger does not invite the guest into the hotel for the specific purpose of having a drink and does not allow the guest to pay for the drinks. In this case I am satisfied the guest was bona fide. However, 1 would like to point out. that 1 do not consider it a wise procedure as it only results in prosecutions.” The charge was dismissed.

A contented baby caused an unusual diversion at the annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Plunket Society. During the address of Dr. Martin Tweed, Auckland, medical adviser to the New Zealand council, the baby became a trifle bored and began to sing softly and gurgle to itself. Its mother became embarrassed by this behaviour and stole towards the door. She was stopped by a shout from Dr. Tweed. “Don’t take that baby out," he called. “I cannot speak better than before an audience that includes a baby.”

Amy Mollison succeeded in breaking the London— Cape Town record established by Rose, by 669 minutes, and the Blackball Oddfellows’ Ball on Friday, May 15th., will also break all previous records for attendance, music and fun. —Advt.

An increase in the retail prices of block cake and pastry goods was forecast at a widely-attended meeting of Auckland master pastrycooks. It was resolved that, owing to the increased cost of ingredients, particularly eggs, fruit, and butter, the retail price of block cake and pastry goods would have to be increased in the near future. Mention was made of the impossibility of securing supplies of the Australian one-crown and two-crown varieties of raisin, the two kinds used largely by pastrycooks. It was stated that the only grade available was the three-crown, which was too expensive. That in itself meant an increase in the cost'of ingredients. The association is taking steps to bring the matter before the Government with a view to having the duty on American raisins modified, in view of the unsatisfactory position in regard to importations from Australia.

“The Government is well seized of the importance of University education and sets no real reason for education to be retarded by any lack of facilities,” said the Attorney-Gen-eral and Minister of Justice, MiMason, in giving the capping address at the annual graduation ceremony at Victoria University College, Wellington, last evening. Referring to the requirements in buildings and playing areas, the Minister said that the Government saw no virtue in leaving that undone while men were available to do it. That was the way it appeared to the present Government. Where there was work to be done, and there were unemployed men to do it, it should not be beyoqd the wit of man to do it. Tributes to Mr. Mason, as the first graduate of Victoria College to attain Ministerial rank in New* Zealand, were paid by various speakers. Mr. H. A. Parkinson, who presided, extended cordial congratulations to Mr. Mason on the attainment to Ministerial rank as did the Chancellor of the New . Zealand University (Hon. J. Hanan), who said that Mr. Mason brought distinction to himself and Victoria College, by being the first to be appointed a Minister of the Crown holding the portfolios of Justice and AttorneyGeneral, which was the blue riband of the legal profession.
