MAREO RE-TRIAL
THE DATE FIXED. [PER PREwfi ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, May 7. The re-trial of Eric Mareo for the alleged murder of his wife, Thelma Mareo, will open at Auckland on June 1. Mareo, who is at present an inmate of Mount Eden Prison, was sentenced to death by Mr. Justice Fair at Auckland criminal sessions on February 28. The re-trial was ordered following an appeal to the Executive Council, presided over by the Governor-General. At the first trial, the Crown case was handled by Mr. A. H. Johnstone, K.C., and Mr. V. N. Hubble, for the reason that the Crown Prosecutor at Auckland, Mr. V. R. Meredith, was on his way back to New Zealand after managing the All Blacks in Great Britain. Now that he has taken up his duties as Crown Prosecutor again, the Crown evidence will be led by him. Mareo will again be defended bv Mr. IT. F. O’Leary. K.C., of Wellington, with Mr. Trevor Henry and Mr. K. C. Aekins. Fresh evidence is to 'come from Australia. It is not yet known how many Australian witnesses will be Drought to Auckland. Their evidence will not be taken on commission, as is usual in civil cases. It is understood that Mr. Justice Ostler will be the Judge.
