TRAIN MURDERS
BUYING WOMEN’S CLOTHES. [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] BRISBANE, April 30. Further evidence was given to-day in the City Court by Detective Inspector Jessen and Detective Garvey, who arrested Kopit (otherwise Colbert), who is charged with murders on the train. The testimony of the detectives supported Kopit’s signed statement concerning the attacks on his victims. Detective Mahoney, of Brisbane, said that, while he was escorting Kopit through Sydney to Brisbane, Kopit had suggested a car drive through Darlinghurst, so that he.could indicate the shops where he bought the women’s clothing and shoes, in which he masqueraded at Sydney and at Melbourne, until he was arrested. To this, Detective Mahoney had assented, and Kopit had pointed out different shops. Detective Mahoney related a conversation by Kopit after his arrest, when th'e latter said he boarded at several hotels in Queensland, using the stolen railway pass to take him to Rockhampton, Maryborough and Yeppon, finally boarding the Bundaberg mail train on April 2. The hearing was adjourned.
CONDEMNED YOUTHS. SYDNEY, April 30. A further development in the agitation against the hangings of two youths, Jones and Hickey, is that a letter has been sent to the Minister of Justice from Mr. Vincent Cahill, of Dubbo, who is the nephew of the late Mr. Montague Henwood (who was murdered by Hickey in a train). Mr. Cahill initiated a fund in Dubbo for Hickey’s defence. The letter suggets that, while Hickey has a likeable personality, he is quite irresponsible. The letter informs the Minister that, while the writer considers that he has a family connection, he has been impelled on Hickey’s behalf, to reveal his knowledge of the condemned youth in a way that may react in Hickey’s favour. Hickey was a member of the Dubbo Scout Troop, of which Mr. Cahill is Scoutmaster. ■
