The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), Crs. H. T. Parry, G. Heinz, E. L. Park, T. W. Duff, ,). King, and H. L. Michel. Apologies were received from Crs. E. Teichelmaim, A. R. Elcock and A. J. Thompson.
A deputation consisting of Messrs G. Detlaff and G. Raine, representing North Revell Street residents, protested against the closing of the right-of-way to the sea beach. It was pointed out that the matter was completely out of the hands of the Council, and that the Commissioner of Lands was the proper person to approach. The Local Government Loans Board acknowledged receipt of application for water supply loan, 1936, £lB,OOO, and stating that the application would be dealt with by the Loans Board at its first available meeting.
The Chamber of Commerce, Greymouth, forwarded copy of resolution giving hearty support to tfie construction of a sea-coast road between Hokitika and Ross, and hoping that a united effort will be made to impress on the Government the importance of the work. —It was decided to support the construction of the Kanieri bridge. The proprietor, Radio Station 3ZR, Greymouth, solicited a donation towards the funds of 3ZR, as owing to the small subsidy, the loss to the proprietor is about £6OO per annum.— The Council regretted it could not make a donation, but would support the station’s application for an increased subsidy.
William L. Robertson wrote, asking whether the Council had considered his letter of February 4 last, and asking when the Inspector’s report will be available, and, further, that if the clippings from the Christchurch papers are not required, that they be returned to him. —Received', clippings to be returned. The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised that the area marked “right-of-way.” situated between Sections 3260 and 3263, in the Borough of Hokitika, according to the records, is unalienated Crown lands, and explaining that a right-of-way means the right of passage over the land of another, and as provided by the Land Act, no dedication or grant of a right-of-way established by reason only of user, he presumed or allowed to be asserted or established as against the Crown. —Received. F. J. Andrews, representing the master butchers, Hokitika, wrote, pointing out that the electric light has not yet been installed at the abattoirs, and this morning the butchers at the abattoirs had to work in the dark. — Left to Mayor and Town Clerk. J. B. Ward applied to install a septic tank at section 706/7, Ralesion Street. —Granted subject to conditions supplied'. E. W. Heenan applied for transfer of dangerous goods license No. lOS (15,972 gals, in 44-gal. drums), from R. K. Entwistle to himself. —Granted.
Bassett and Paterson applied to in stall kerbside petrol pump in iron of their garage, Revell Street. —Ap proved, subject to the usual conditions.
The manager of “Blue Star’’ Taxis applied to instal outside petrol pump in Robinson’s right-of-way off Weld Street. —Approved, subject to usual conditions.
The Clerk of the Westland County Council advised that a conference of interested local bodies would be held towards the end of the month, to deal with the collection of heavy traffic fees, with a view to changing the present system by having a local collector, and obtaining prompt returns to the local bodies concerned each quarter, and asking whether the Council will appoint a delegate to attend the conference at Hokitika. —The Mayor and Town Clerk were appointed. The abattoirs’ report of stock slaughtered during the month was: 33 cows, 5!) bullocks, 26 calves, 229 sheep, 126 lambs, 15 pigs, 34 heifers; condemned, nil. Fees collected during month £BO/4/-; fees collected during corresponding month last year £'Bo/6/-. The financial statement showed receipts £623/18/10, expenditure £826 5/3; District Fund Account £74/11/credit balance. Accounts amounting to £622/2/2 already paid were ratified. Accounts amounting to £25 11/- were passed for payment. It was decided that a 60-c.p. street light be erected at the corner of Park and Livingstone Streets, and to repair the sexton’s residence, and to call tenders for painting the building.
The tender of Haussman Bros, for painting the clock-tower was accepted'. It was decided not to accept any of the tenders for carrying refuse to the dump. It was decided to procure material for fencing of open drain in Livingstone Street.
