MELBOURNE. March 13. A change in the weather, bringing rain, has subdued the bush and grass fires in most parts .of the State,' but a small* village called Cockatoo, in the Dandenong Ranges, was in danger of complete destruction, today.

By the combined efforts of local residents, the fire’s progress was arrested. but not before four cottages and a two-storied house were burned.
