A London cablegram announced'the death of the musical comedienne, Florence Smithson, By "special resolution, the Greymouth Harbour Board last evening, appointed Captain H. Moar pilot for the port of Greymouth.

The death of Sir James Mills was mentioned by Mr. P. J. McLean at the Greymouth Harbour Board meeting last evening. ' Mr. McLean said Sir James Mills was the pioneer of one of the greatest shipping .companies in the Southern Hemisphere—the Union Steam Ship Company. The speaker said he knew personally what Sir James had done for the coaling ports. On the passing of this veteran,- it was only right that the Board should, place on record its sympathy with those who were left. The motion was carried, members standing.
